Trump is trying to shut it down according to fox news. Like many on here I went to school before it was created. Kids could read and do math. Is D.O.E the reason so many today cannot? I don't know. Sure seems like its been a waste of money from where I sit. All these wonderful theories coming from psycho babblers and their "studies" sure enough aint working.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

I can speak to my own education and the local education system. Education is okay, not terrible, not great, it's adequate. The department of education is likely largely useless but getting rid of it won't increase test scores when an increasing percent of students can't speak English, have no education or discipline at home and have an unstable home life bouncing between mom and dads houses.

Their main purposes seems to be to prevent the termination of teachers who have no business teaching and to indoctrinate American students in leftist, woke ideology.

The only valuable thing they did was standardized testing of the students of all schools across the nation. Which has value for parents deciding where they want (or don't want) their children to go to school. Not that they did one thing that helped increase any of those scores. Get rid of them and the woke and socialistic indoctrination of kids they fostered across the country.
United we stand.

Seems to me the DOE's main goals have become forcing schools to adopt DEI, wokeism and other libtard ideologies with the threat of withholding federal funding if they don't comply.
Granted, many schools do it willingly and will continue to do so federal funding or not.
But I don't think anybody will notice if Linda McMahon is successful in working herself out of the Secretary of Education job by eliminating the DOE.
Eh...wot?

I think this is where the big money goes?

One thing about the old days when schools were paid by property tax you found out who thought education was important, also control of what was being taught was done at the local level. a huge part of my property taxes do go to the county schools, Fire department and law enforcement. Yet we don't use the schools, my house will burn to the ground before a fire department shows up, and cops ya they will show up income to collect the bodies. Just part of not living in town and having to pay for benefits to people that do.

Sure seems like its been a waste of money from where I sit. All these wonderful theories coming from psycho babblers and their "studies" sure enough aint working. I honestly cannot speak on the DOE. I can speak on kids not being able to read or do math but boy could I ramble. lol Kids as a whole eat garbage compared to the past. Thus greatly affects learning. They can thank their parents for that. Kids as a whole go home and stare at a device of some sort instead of reading a book or having minor conversations involving numbers. They can thank their parents. Kids as a whole get way way way less parents support than they used to because mom is busy with Facebook and dad is busy with YouTube. In reality, schools are like 5.5 hours a day , the kids with good parents succeed generally and the ones fighting against all odds because of their crappy upbringing succeed as the exception and not the rule. DOE, no DOE, that isn’t changing. It’s amazing how many people blame kids or teachers that spend a fraction of a day with a kid but don’t pause to consider how the lack of intellectual challenge in their home or the neglect at the hands of media affect them.

As I recall, kindergarten thru 12th grade is supported largely by local taxes. College and vocational training are state funded jobs. States get x amount of federal funding for federally mandated requirements but I think it’s administrated by the state departments of education. It’s complicated.
Now, having said that, most of the non-English speakers learn pretty quickly via the English classes offered in school. They have to, to be able to learn in school and get jobs later on.
The department of education may need to set better priorities but over all, I give it credit for keeping track of educating kids. Politicians are very often NOT educators, social workers, teachers, public system administrators, business owners, data analysts, etc and have little or no clear idea of what public education is all about.
Never too old to learn

Teacher, why do you think that before the DOE kids who graduated knew the 3 R's and now many do not. Somewhere around 2/3 are not at grade level.
PS social workers are a completely useless breed of insect

Doesn’t matter who is funding education, until kids have a functioning and supportive system in the home they will not learn in school. Absentee rates have skyrocketed over the years, classroom behavior has become increasingly worse and parents have failed to continue the childs education at home. Now as generations pass these behaviors along it only continues to get worse.
I do outdoor education programs in schools from time to time, and I suggest anyone volunteer and sign up to be a substitute teacher in a classroom to get a real idea of where our education system is headed. It all starts with bad parenting. Teachers can’t educate feral children.
