As a bow hunter I pay lots of attention to the barometer, especially in early season when I know of a hot food source.

I’m still a rookie trapper but does the barometer affect fur bearers like it does with ungulates? In particular, will beaver put on the feed bag before a big pressure switch? I’ll be out after them all weekend and we have a high pressure storm moving in.

Beaver and mink move hard on an incoming rain front and during it. I make sure I'm set hard during these events

Do you think dam breaks would be particularly effective at that time? Seems with rain a castor mound wouldn’t have the same longevity/effectiveness as dry conditions

Castor mounds are usually set before a rain

The best beaver activity is during a rainy night and the couple nights after a heavy rain.

Peeled stick and castor. No need for dam break rain water will have water cascading

Barometric pressure is the major driver of wind and wind speed. The greater the pressure difference between cells or fronts creates the stronger winds. As to animal movement is it the pressure or the wind that comes with it?

Good question, Bryce. I always understood it that ungulates could sense the pressure change. Whether they have an extra sense or just an acute awareness of increasing atmospheric instability, I’m not sure. But that “trigger” is what increases their activity, most often to feed, before hunkering down to get through the incoming storm.

I don't go after water bearers as a general rule, to much of waste of time here !

However I learned many years ago that hunting or trapping fur bearers was much better prior to a storm coming in
they seem to have a barometer in them !

I was always out making sure sets were down and done and if calling I would always take the time to call a day or right before the storm hit, it always paid off as well !

We used to have a Shih tzu. They are a distant relative to furbrearing canines. She had a very sensitive internal barometer.
Even after she went stone deaf she would get apey when the barometer dropped. She knew when a thunderstorm was coming before there was rain or thunder.
When the barometer would drop she would have been an easy capture in any randomly placed blind set. Like I said, she went apey. Unconsolable. Bless her heart.
