camlock, there are a few chicken fat based "bite and pull" lures on the market now that are good.

Good to know. I’ll add it to my testing list.

Update on Holy Grail…

We have been blessed with cool nights lately in Central Texas. But we had our first 100 degree day yesterday. Lows in the 70s.

Now my testing begins on my M44 concoctions.

By the way… I have had good luck lately on T-Bone foot trap sets using Brains mixed with Cheez Whiz. It sounds too simple to work, but my results are good right now.

I have an ongoing debate in my head about how much location matters vs the bait and lure. For example - I find tracks on a livestock trail. I put in a trail set with a baited T-bone on the upwind side and a little lure on the downwind side. It is my most productive set.

Now I’m starting to put a set 50 yards up the trail and 10 yards upwind of the trail. So far, I have not caught anything in the “off trail” set. My idea is that the coyote should smell my off trail set first and get caught before he gets to my trail set. So far that has not happened. I’m just stubborn enough to keep trying for a while.

So location is winning so far. I do not have confidence that I can draw a coyote more than a couple feet off his travel route.

On two track roads, I set as close to the tire track as possible without the trap being run over. Just fyi.

Thanks for the update! Are the brains/ cheese wiz lure fresh brain or tainted or rotted? I also am in the school to set very close to line of travel and not try to pull a coyote. Keep us posted!

Brains are preserved fresh with sodium benzoate. I harvested them fresh and mixed them with SB right away. I stirred them every day for a week. Then I started using them.

The cheese whiz is right out of the store.

I only make four ounces at a time. I use it over a few days. Then I clean it out and make another four ounces.

I've never seen an m-44 so take this as you will but, what if you used something to hold a runnier lure? Like a chunk of fur or the stuff they wrap horses ankles with? Thats what I do for my grab sets. Just my 2 cents

I've never been able to pull them more than a few feet from the wheel ruts either.

And Ive used many, many brands of lure over the years.

The only consistent way I've seen to draw them much of any distance is with large baits, and by large I mean hundred pound minimum. And that doesn't always work. Fish and Game really fouled us here when they made it so you can't set in the roads a couple years ago. Because they travel roads. So now I have to find other places they consistently travel (very, very few places they travel as consistently as a road), old roads that are nondriveable we can set, or I set as close to the road as possible, oftentimes so close that there could be some argument whether one jaw is in the road or not. I figure two to three steps is all the farther I want to try and pull them, and less if possible.
