Look up what bass pro in Morgantown has, they would probably have kits and may offer classes.

Joe Hardy's store had lots of fly tying material, but they're closed I believe.

For the difference in price at bass pro, i would buy the better kit. Which may or may not be in stock.

If you have a local shop buy and get advice from them most here in the Western States have classes for free to promote.

Just a thought, I used to belong to a conservation club that had a fly tying group that met once a month. Anybody who wanted to try fly tying could come by and watch, ask questions and get help learning how.

Anything like that near you?

There’s a fly shop about 45 min away and they do a class every year but it books up fast and I’m not sure what the cost is. I’m gonna check the fish n boat commission website to see if they offer anything too

Thanks for all the great advice everybody!

I started out with a basic setup and found some YouTube tutorials super helpful. Sometimes a simple kit works just fine when you’re just starting out.

Smash, clean your inbox. I have a lot of stuff you might be interested in. I bought a fly shop out a few years ago.

I think learning to shoot bears would be easier, but I have bad fingers so pulling a trigger is easier. grin

I guess I haven’t tied any in 5 years or so. My FIL gave me a cabelas kit for Christmas one year. I tied a faired amount At first until the kids were big enough to grab everything I was using off the table. I need to start again now that they’re big enough to leave things alone. 😂. I think the cabelas kit is great starter kit but the vise takes some getting used to. I’ve got 4 of the Plano fishing boxes full of materials and another box of scrap fur, I’d guess half purchased and half scavenged. I’ve got a lot of $ tied up in the couple boxes. Unless you really want some specific materials/colors, you can find just about anything to tie with.

I have this book, it's really good and covers all kind of stuff. It comes with a DVD too but I haven't used it.

Look up "the orvis fly pattern index" book. Instructions and recipes for probably hundreds of different flys.
Really good book. I don't know if still on in print, but it is still available.
It gives general and specific instructions. And gives recipes with hook size and type, thread size and type, and required feathers and or other materials.

Pick a couple flys to get started, pheasant tail nymph and adams dry fly would be my suggestion. Not hard to tie, good foundation of basic skills. And real good for catching fish.

Not all "kits" are "junk", and I'm sure some are better than others. That's how I got started, and advanced to better ie: more expensive equipment. You just gotta do some research and you gotta start somewhere! It's great hobby and it's a real blast catching fish on a fly you tied yourself.
