Well, I received the phone call I didn’t want to get yesterday morning…my DIL wouldn’t be coming hunting. See, since my granddaughter was born, Papa had always babysat so my son could take his wife and try to get her a bird. Well, someone else “volunteered” and then late Friday night informed them they needed to be done by 0830. I didn’t find out until this morning on the way to the property. My son decided to go and I decided to just tag along with him. This property we both can hunt, but I spend about 6-7 days a week out there and know the critters. He’d went Friday evening and knew about where some birds had roosted and I’d went to a different area and had one marked in the exact tree. Talking Friday night I’d offered them that bird, but he wanted to give the other birds a shot. I’d told him there was another bird to the East of where he wanted to go and he assured me there wasn’t another bird that direction because he would’ve seen it or heard it fly up. I just agreed and nodded through the phone. Saturday morning when I got the call we decided we’d just go listen and if one came he came, but we weren’t chasing any. I let him lead and offered subtle suggestions. When he got to a certain spot I told him we didn’t need to go any farther. He asked why and I told him a bird would be about 100-150yds away and it was getting light. He gave me that “whatever” look and we stopped to listen. It wasn’t 5 minutes later and guess where a bird sounded off??? Yep, about 100yds away to the East, lol. We got set up thinking he’d fly down and go North. We never heard him fly down, but when he gobbled in the clearcut we knew he went South. We got down along the creek that separates the property by what we call North and South. This bird was on fire and reached his strut zone out there and just let it rip. My son played him some tunes on his trumpet and finally went quiet and let that gobbler think about things. While waiting, we had a gobbler and some jakes cross the creek heading South about 100yds to our West. They never made a sound. We started hearing other birds start gobbling across the clearcut and my son reached out to them with that trumpet and that got the original bird even more fired up and heading our direction. When he first appeared he was slightly out of range. But he strutted and kept moving a little closer over the next 15min or so. I was recording and finally told him if he wanted him to shoot him to shoot cause I was tired of holding the phone, lol. After the shot the gobbler that had crossed the creek and another decided to come in and pay their final respects. I grabbed my gun and honestly thought about squeezing the trigger, but decided I didn’t want to take my bird that way. Plus, my DIL still needed a bird and these didn’t seem too spooked despite their competition getting shot in front of them. We let them move on off and Brennan went out to retrieve his prize.
