I don’t have a lot of castor to grind this year. I’m thinking of trying glycol, I have on hand, for just the little I have. I can definitely smell a sweet smell to it. Is it a mistake to try it or better to go with what I know works in the past. Was thinking of trying a different method just to know. I have plenty of the old lure on hand if it’s a problem batch. In Dirk Miller’s book he does use glycol and he was a fine beaver trapper. Just don’t know if my grade of glycol with the sweet smell is an issue.

Glycol will deteriorate over time. It will develop a glue like odor. I tend to stick with glyerine.

Mr.Kytrapper, Years ago I had a bad experience using glycol and beaver castor. I had some dried castor that I wanted to soak some to make grinding easier. I put the castor in a one-gallon ice cream bucket and covered it with glycol and let it soak for a couple of months. When I was ready to grind it, I popped the lid and noticed a quite different odor than what I was expecting. I ground that castor with the queer odor and put it up in a couple of quart jars for later use. When I went to use it, I noticed that the odor had dramatically changed. I could barely notice a faintness of castor, but it had a leathery and heavy odor of that of like shoe polish.....I never used glycol after that.

These when days I grind and put up beaver castor I use a blend I make of "fixed" beaver urine, glycerin and everclear. It smells like a beaver!

As long as the P Glycol is good it should be odorless. I had bought some in an old 5 gal tin can container partially used years ago. When I went to use it and to smell it I could tell it was bad. I use more Glycol then Glycerine in our work. Both have their uses just need to know you are using good material and for what purpose.
