I had a male cardinal fly into the shop I work at by flying in through an open garage door during a delivery. Shop is about 50' X 125' with lots of things to perch on/hide out up near the ceiling.

Turned off all the lights and opened the garage door all the way open. Using a pole to bump things near the bird , I got it out in under a minute.

Key is turning off the lights so the bird goes to the light outside.

This is the 2nd time I've chased a bird out of here.

I did a bird in a chimney Saturday
slots about big enough to shove a VHS tape through in the chimney cap but no screen inside.
birds get in but can't get out

class B chimney on a boiler and water heater , birds get in and die and lay on the electric damper and then it doesn't open right then it sets off the carbon monoxide detector

I had to take the 2 foot peice off the top of the boiler , then run a snake up to get the bird to decided to fly down I caught the starling and got it out.

once that was done , put it all back together and test ran the boiler , we had a warm day but back to 40 at night and 30 and a little snow Sunday night so not a good time to be without heat.

this was for a friends parents , they are in there 80s and while she is in good health he can hardly see any more.

My wife would divorce me if I ever shot a cardinal and I wouldn't blame her.

I lower my garage door once and trapped a hummingbird in the garage. I was unaware that the bird was inside. I found it a few days later when it was dead. I suppose it died of starvation. They burn a lot of energy.

I get birds in my shop quite regularly, often enough where the dog will help me chase it out. Turning off the lights definitely helps.

for bats and birds in houses/ basements I have a fishing net tennis racket combo that is very effective
knock them down scoop them up cover and dump them outside

Bats the last few I just flipped a large bath towl up as they flew around and they got caught in it then I took them outside and opened it up with the towel between them and I so they flew away.

Birds have been from nets ot just letong the cat get them or shooting them bb guns and picking shots work fine if other methods get frustrating.

They used to be bad in the Atwoods here, I don't remember if they had any flying around the last time I was there or not. They have plastic strips hanging over the big doors now where they run forklifts in and out.
