I’ve never found one method I was happy with. I’m going to do 40-50 tomato plants this year and have the kids sell some for life lessons. These will mainly be various plum varieties (see indeterminate). They’ll be planted into the ground and on irrigation.

What’s everyone’s favorite support methods? I have a fair amount of t posts, so bonus points for getting to use those.

Remesh cages.

12.5 gauge woven wire fence.

Page wire cages and T posts.

I don't grow hundreds of plants but in my 16 foot raised beds I use cattle panels.

What is a page wire cage?

A neighbor several years ago took down several hundred feet of sheep sized woven wire about 50 inches tall and good guage wire. I cut a foot off and made several dozen circular tomato cages that work well. I support them with my trapping stakes. They are about 16 inches in diameter and work well.

Wife will put out 100 or more plants each year and we put in cattle panels and use bailing twine from hay to tie them back. They hold up and are effective.

I never have had to stake them since I started spraying the plants with viagra.

Concrete wire and Tpost. Prune, keep up off the ground, and spacing so they don't touch.

Regular cattle fence. I think I cut it to 10 or 11 sections for each cage.

Heavy gauge concrete reinforcing wire. I make the tubes 24" round for tomatoes and 18" for cucumbers. I cut the cross ties of the bottom which leaves 5" spikes to push into the dirt.

They are five-feet tall.

I've tried everything, the concrete wire is good but you need to make them 24" diameter , the spike will rot off and the cages need a tall stake, Everything else never worked for long on the regular indeterminate varieties, grows through everything unless you ruthlessly prune them. Now, I usually just let them sprawl and take the good ones, We don't go through lots of tomatoes anyway.

I never stake my tomato plants. I grow plenty of plants, no trouble finding tomatoes.
