Guys, I found a mason jar of sack oil that I saved from about 10 years ago.. it was just sac oil,, I didn’t put any preservatives or glycerin in it… I havnt opened it up.. but was wondering if it might have spoiled ( saving myself from a potential blast of rotten stink) or if it is still good? If it doesn’t stink,, does that mean it is still good? I’ve never messed with sack oil that I’ve extracted myself with any extent.

I would put my nose to it to check for rancidity.

I've noticed sac oil will go rancid pretty fast (in my opinion) but I've never kept a jar for near that long. Scents and glands do interesting things with age you may be sitting on a hot item. I have castor from the early 80s that was in a garage fire in the jar and its absolutely fire on beaver, i use it when nothing else works, its just castor but i add a few drops of sac oil to it. I usually keep the oil in the sac frozen from one season to the next. I don't save a ton.
Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

I've never had sac oil go rancid. I learned at an early age that sac oil will stay good as long as it doesn't get contaminated. I hang my oil glands and let the exterior of the oil sac dry before I squeeze the oil out. If you squeeze the oil from a fresh oil sac, you stand a good chance of getting blood or other contaminates in the oil. This can cause the oil to get rancid.

There you go. I always have squeezed out my oil from fresh-frozen sacs. I have also seen it go bad over time. Rancid as all get out.

I like it for flat sets in rainy weather. I dont think a hurricane can get that smell out of a bone or dry piece of wood.

Sometimes sack oil works when nothing else will. At least, that's been my experience.

I remove the oil from the beaver as I skin them, rarely take the entire sac out except to use in a dirt hole set. I have stored the oil on a shelf in the same jar, for in excess of 20 years. When using it lure I just shake the jar like Bob mentioned above. I just make sure it is never exposed to direct sunlight. Works for me.

Man I would open that jar and smell it, and If it stinks, it stinks.
I have a jar sitting in my garage for 10 years now too, full of coyote and fox pee that I collected from the odd one.
I open that jar about once a year and sniff it just to feel alive. It’s kinda fun!
