Been looking at the Williams long distance open sights for muzzleloaders. I have a set on my 30-30 and it is nothing short of how amazingly accurate I can be with open sights.

Do any of you have any experience with these muzzleloader sights? They look intriguing.

Several reviews on youtube. Looking at options.

Sights like that have been around for a long time. Back in the 80's and 90's I watched people in the Unlimited class for Handgun Metallic Silhouette shoot 3", 10 shot groups at 200yds with similar setups. Most people wouldn't believe the accuracy that can be obtained.

It was funny when I first shot those sights on my 30-30. Buddy went down range and came back with a puzzled look on his face. He asked "What kind of sights are those?" I asked why. He said I shot a 1" group at 100 yards but was off by a few left and a few high. I thought I just got lucky and played it off like I was Bill Hickok. Shot again and got same results. We both were amazed at the accuracy these sights gave.

So this is why I am asking about these sights. If they can take my muzzleloader farther out in range and accuracy, I will give it a whirl.

I had the Lyman peep sights on a 50 cal back in the 80's

50 yards...all shots touched each other...

yes a Peep is considered an iron sight

on some of my other more traditional muzzle loaders I run Marbles bullseye sights

I have this on a 45 Kentucky and a 50 deer hunter
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1828132532
on that Kentucky with the long barrel and the nice little brass blade front sight you can do very well they center up fast you hardly even see the rear , you just focus on the front and put the blade where it needs to be.

A peep is considered too modern of a sight for some rondys , as is the adjustable rear sight on a Cabelas Hawkens and some of the later TC hawkens

It depends on how the "rule" is written.

For most traditional rendezvous, the requirement is "open, non-adjustable, metallic sights". No peeps, rings, apertures, fiber-optics, etc.

If the rule is for hunting, and just says "no scopes", then I would imagine a peep would qualify.

Which is bizarre since there are examples of peeps going back to matchlocks.

As in most of life, there are exceptions to every rule.

The overwhelming majority of flintlocks and caplocks on the "frontier" had simple iron sights. That's what rendezvous try to emulate.

Understood. But to say the provenance isn't there is a bit misleading. The matchlocks had a rear sight with multiple holes for different ranges... And by the early 1800's through the end of the muzzleloading era they became more common.

I'm afraid what we "know" today is based a lot on survivorship bias.

That is the exact site I put on my muzzleloader and got a bull elk last October at 202 yrds. Sights are accurate if you can do your part.

I put those on my new CVA, I like them so far have only ran about 50 thru it though. At 50 yards it’s a ragged hole, I’m still playing with powder out at 100. I’m pretty sure they are staying on though.

Si havent used those particular sights but I run a Skinner site on my 308 and they make awesome peeps for just about anything. They also have a wide range of sizes of apetures so you can switch them out for whatever distances you're shooting. They also make a little holder to keep a different apeture right on your firearm so it's not loose in your pocket.

Nessie, one day I would love to come shoot with you just to see how difficult smooth bore shooting is.
