Rehydrated /degreased my large raccoon from this season and he is pickled and now in the alum tan. Be a couple more days for that part. He’s a biggn. Could make a nice mantle.
Will post photos as I move along.
Again I thank everyone who has assisted me with learning to tan!

4/7. Had the day off so I’m trying to be productive! This is after the alum. Thinning the coon a bit on the beam trying to get some extra junk off

4/9 Put back on the stretcher to dry some and take shape. This is before breaking process. Maybe do that tmrw after work. That is the most fun part! Look how weird the skin looks now

After a few days of breaking and further thinning, I think my raccoon is done! I have a couple stupid holes to stitch up but overall, it’s a nice prime pelt with good fluid movement!
Here is inside

And outside

Just dawn. A load of it. And used a brush to kinda scrub it. The water was nasty the next morning. Oily and thick.
I have an old book that suggests kerosene but I didn’t wanna mess with that

I used Colman fuel, outside to degrease waterfowl when I was doing taxidermy.
