10 feet is good for drags, 15 is better

I predominantly use drags in sage brush country and 8’ works for me especially if there’s heavy brush. I have had to spend time looking for a few critters if the area is somewhat open or patchy brush but I’ve never lost one.

In very open country more might be needed but with a good drag I've never used more than 7 or 8 ft.

I’ve gravitated towards a lighter drag (JC Connor 2lb forged point) and longer chain, 12-14 foot.

Trail setting in the tag alder swamps of MI, 8’ of chain is max. I only used drags in this application for ease of setting because whether staked or dragged, there will be a large disturbance close to the set location regardless.

I trap heavy brush and timber and don’t use grapples. I use a 5-6 foot branch and 5 feet of chain.
