Yes, Wyoming is all surface mined coal today. There was one underground mine near Rock Springs, but I think it closed a couple years ago.

I have been underground at a couple mines in Utah and Colorado. High seams, with extreme cover. Over 2000 feet. In really deep mines, you have the dangers of bumps and rock bursts. The weight of the mountain causes pillar failure….the walls ( ribs ) can spall violently, throwing coal horizontally like it was shot out of a cannon.

Coal fired plants are a thing of the past most are going to Natural Gas we have a new NG plant that was built in Lawrence County, Pa. and they converted an old Penn Power coal fired plant in West Pittsburg, Pa. also in Lawrence County, Pa. to NG.

NG makes sense since there seems to be an infinite supply and it requires little if any refining before burning.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.
