The first fox I ever caught was caught in a #1 jump set on a crossing log tryin' to catch a skunk. I was 8 at the time(1960). I caught 3 on that log that year, every time it snowed I got a fox, as snow hid the trap. By the late 1960's I was catching 20 or more fox a year using foot traps on a few logs on our farm. By 1971 I had switched to snares on crossing logs. A few years later I had learned to go down the streams in the fall with a chainsaw and eliminate most of the crossing logs, leaving the ones I could see from the road. The next advance in my learning curve was to slide a tin can onto the support wire so I could easily see from the road if I had a catch. Upright can meant no catch, tipped over and I had some action. This really sped up my check time as I was working full time at our mink ranch and zoo. In fur boom times, for those old enough to remember, caught fur was stolen at an alarming rate. Nothing disappeared faster than a red fox bouncing around in a field. Foxes caught on a log dropped off and were not bouncing around in sight. Also with snares on a crossing log you did not need another set for a mile or more around, this set location is that good. Because a coon walks a log with his nose right on the wood I did not have coons plugging up my sets. I always set multiple snares on each log. From 1976 to almost 1990 I averaged 150 fox , both red and gray, between November 15 and the start of buck season (about December 3) from crossing logs and I never had more than 20 logs set! The first picture in this group is a log where I caught 31 fox in less than 1 month, 80 in 3 years (note how tore up it is). I almost cried when it washed away in a flood. One note here never set a log over deep water that a person may walk over. You will sleep better at night. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/04/full-11499-254638-op114.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/04/full-11499-254639-op111.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/04/full-11499-254640-op115.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/04/full-11499-254641-op121.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/04/full-11499-254642-op127.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/04/full-11499-254643-op128.jpg)

She wore scarlet begonias, tucked into her curls. I knew right away, she was not like other girls.

Most humane snare set there is. Looks good, but you did not show the tin can in a none catch situation. Was it hanging below the log? More photos please and like your demo a lot......jk

Wow the amount of fox crossing one log is amazing. And to catch them year after year. Thanks for sharing
