Trapping some beavers for a guy and they’ve recently flooded about two acres. Was trying to start at the exterior feeding channels and work my way in as I caught animals. Problem seems to be that there’s tons of “new” water, an abundance of food, and no real defined channels to target them. Is too much water something you guys encounter? And if so, any suggestions?

Yep. Dam breaks. Either they repair it or lose that water. And if they lose the water then there is no longer too much beaver water. If they dont repair a small notch in the dam, make it deeper.

To clarify, there’s too much water that’s not quite deep enough for drowner sets at the dam.

What would trap placement be relative to a dam break? Thinking I’ll have to long chain it.

Not quite deep enough at the dam? You can drown a beaver in 18-24" of water on a drowning rod...so there is less water than that...at the dam? If you try long chaining him at the dam, and don't catch him by a hind foot, he'll get wrapped up in debris and twist off. At some point, the water will be deep enough for them, and the flooding will cease. They have to eat. They'll start making runs out of the flooded area to find food, if they haven't already. You could long chain them at the entry/exit points, but keep in mind, the bank area needs to be clean so they don't get wrapped around anything if caught by a front foot.

I’m running chains on my drowner sets. Probably need 36” of water to make it happen with my setup and the current depth probably isn’t quite there yet.

Invest in a few fiberglass 1/2" rods. They're affordable and open up a few more options/possibilities. Another tool in the trapper's tool bag. I know, most of us have plenty already...LOL.

Heres my take. If you get a front foot, 18” is enough water depth. If you get a back foot with a good hold, its not going anywhere. So if you have 18” of depth, set it up. I use chain slides most of the time, and it is fine. I use rotors for my bottom weight.
You do what seems right for you, but for control work I almost always set deep for back foot because it avoids non-targets. Once in a great while a beaver manages to get a front foot in a foothold set for back foot, usually because the water level drops, but it is rare.
