Today, I got 100 pecan, 100 shellbark hickory, 100 mixed hickory, 100 white oak and 100 wild plum trees from the Missouri Department of Conservation.

I didn't get the 100 white pines I paid for, but may later.

The other, more detailed posts on trees and cuttings all went poof.

What do you all have coming to plant or grow this Spring?

Keith

about 3 weeks ago we got 75 cedar, 10 each of pecan, nuttall oak, black walnut, and 25 each of smooth sumac and roughleaf dogwood. All but the dogwoods got planted, they're in nursery pots on the back deck. I got them from Misouri Conservation Dept.

Also have a dozen red osier dogwood cuttings starting in pots, ordered on Etsy.

Do you have to protect everything from deer? Around here, we have to cage or tube everything but cedar.

Are you doing any kind of protection for the trees?

I know in my area those Oaks make good snacks for the 4 legged locusts (deer).

The trees I plant out on the farm, I am going to use wire and possibly tree tubes to protect from deer, rabbits and voles. Most of those trees will be potted up to resell. Those will be protected by elevation in IBC totes and live stock guardian dogs.

I did get a nuisance permit to kill deer on my farm. I posted on it before. It was surprisingly quick and easy to get. I like our game warden. He is a nice guy and easy to work with.

Does anyone know a good source for large numbers of cheap tree tubes, where the shipping isn't horrible?

The shipping on pots is horrible too. It's often much more than the pots, which aren't cheap when you're buying thousands.

There's a nursery supply dealer in Piqua, Ohio, called AM Leonard, that I am going to make a trip out to. I hope the savings in shipping makes a huge difference. It was over $4000.00 to get the pots I wanted shipped from 2 other dealers I looked at.

Keith, what kind of pots are you putting the trees in?, sounds like you're not direct planting...
Most of the nursery's here get trees in 1 bu. black plastic pots, or the next size down, about 2/3 rd of a bushel. These are primarily fruit or ornamental varieties.

12 Northern Chinese / American cross Chestnut trees. Not the southern Chinese crosses that the blight kills in 15 or so years. These trees can grow 100' tall and are blight resistant.

For individual cuttings, seeds and smaller trees, I am using 11.8" high by 3.9" by 3.9" wide cheap pots I bought off of Amazon. I also have a couple thousand 1 gallon trade pots and others up to 3 gallons.

I have seeds mostly in air pruning beds of various large sizes. most cuttings are going in feed and mineral tubs.

The small berry's are an excellent food source for birds and squirrels.

I have a few hackberry on my property. Some are tall established trees. The short ones are browsed by deer so much they look a topiery of a 3 foot mushroom.

Just small time planting for me this week. I bought 2 more Kieffer pears trees to plant next week. These are 8 foot trees that home depot got early from down south. They already have leaves pushed out about 2-3 inches. I've kept them in the pots and bring them in the barn at night. Our temps have been 22° to 25°F at night. I'll plant them in another week or two.
Home Depot knew they'd probably freeze out and was selling them 2 for the price of one. Which is $20/piece

Adding to our orchard and farmstead. Have 10 red mulberry trees, 6 plum trees, 3 peach trees and 4 apple tress that will go in the ground soon. All bareroot. Will also plant 10 or so additional elderberry plants.

If trees are not hardy in zone 3 or less it really a waste of money and time. Any fruit or nuts, berries are better than pine trees. Been planting stuff for 30 years southern Douglas Co.

Dang it Keith, no wonder I can’t get any trees local.

Just joking. I worked with the local USFS out of Salem during my summers in college.

I’m cutting trees and opening up ground. Will be planting pecans and persimmons later.

Very good wildlife trees and overall nice tree with not much negatives. Native of Missouri. Treed many coons late season when hackberries are loaded. When coon scat looks like jam with bb's all over in it late - they been in the hackberry trees.
