I bought two fur tumblers from an estate last year. One was 220 and I didn't have a receptacle wired so it has sat over winter. I finally installed a 15 amp 220 receptacle and am starting to take a look at the motor and gear reducer. It's a Nord 1 HP motor (80L/4) with a gear reducer (SK 02040). It's got a straight shaft on one end, and then a right angle shaft on the other end and it looks like a wheel hub was welded on that will accept a 4 lug wheel that will use friction to spin the tumbler. I checked the gear box and there is oil in it. Both shafts move freely by hand. I plugged it in and flipped the controller switch and it did move, then stop. Tried a time or two more and it did start spinning freely, but a bit loud. Tried it again this morning and it didn't want to move when flipped on. It has likely sat for some time. Is there some type of lubrication needed on the motor end? I don't know a lot about this unit, but figured I'd see if anyone on here has experience.

Hello,
Did the electric motor growl when you turned it on?
Or, no sound at all?

Is it 3 phase or single phase?

It did not growl. Seemed like it hesitated. It did run fine for a bit and responded (slowly) to the dial, though I would say it was louder than I expected. The plate indicates it may have a brake?

Is it a 3 phase motor and if so do you have 3 phase? The ID plate looks like it says 3 phase.

Looks like a 3 phase motor but I can’t read the nameplate very well. Looks like the nameplate says 230/460 if so it’s 3 phase

Everything the left touches it destroys

There's some scratches on the plate, but I think I can make out 3~. That makes me feel dumb. It came wired with a Nema 6 15 plug with 1 hot, 1 neutral, 1 ground. The cord comes from the controller to the wall and then another cord into the motor. Wouldn't three phase have more wires?

230 can be single phase but 460 is 3 phase. 4 wires needed for 3 phase. 3 each 120V and 1 neutral.

Snap, that's what threw me. The cord that came with the tumbler is wired with 1 hot, 1 neutral, 1 ground and a nema 6-15 plug.

Oh well. I'll have to figure out a different way to power it, no 3 phase. I'll look at a VFD I guess. Or If you know anyone that needs a 3 phase, let me know!

Did you look inside, if not, I’ll bet it’s wired for three phase but there’s no ground.

No starting capacitor. JT, that's interesting, the analog controller could be a VFD?

Yeah it's 3 phase. Explode the pic and you can see it. They just took that nema 6-15 plug and made it work for the 3 phases and doesn't have a ground. I can't see a hp rating on the plate but I guess it is under 2hp. I do cobbling stuff for myself like that here around the place but then, I know what I can get away with.

Whatya can do..................is get one of those 1p to 3p converter VFD drives from Amazon. Under 100 bucks.
https://www.amazon.com/XCFDP-220V-2-2kw-3HP-Single-Phase/dp/B09KN3MS45? Something like this. Feed into the converter, 240 V 1P and get 240 V 3P.
I got one running on my mill that has a 2hp 3p motor. Works great.

That's probably a 9 lead motor. If it is, leads should be for 230 operation :
1 and 7 L1
2 and 8 L2
3 and 9 L3
Tie 4, 5, and 6

You need to be some kind of an electric guy to pull this off. Or know one.

If you buy one, get it before the tarrifs kick in. lol

Thanks all. That black controller box with the rheostat and on/off switch is labeled "Hennig" "the perfect machine protection". Is that a VFD for converting single phase to 3 phase?

Can you take a picture of the inside of the box and post it?
