Froor rotted out of old log house .I removed about 8 yards of dirt to fix floor . The building was 125 yrs + old . Years ago my Dad said that dirt like that was dead . Is that true, and for how long would it take to be productive ?

Soil is full of life, microbes, bacteria, mycelium. It's likely not "dead" but it may take a few years to balance out. Add a bit of manure to get some bacteria started and it'll likely be "living soil" sooner than later.

He means use a metal detector to find any coins, jewelry or other metal objects that ended up in the dirt under the cabin floor.

I found a few old coins under the floor of a log cabin. Nothing spectacular. The only "dead" dirt I've encountered is soil mucked out of a pond.

Microbial life, even weed seed can like dormant for hundreds and thousands of years. The mineral content of the soil should not have changed much (or at all) either.

Dead dirt is dirt without any microorganisms and bacteria inside it. Mixing it with some living soil can revive it within a year usually, unless whatever killed the soil in still in it. Iirc cutting it 50/50 with living mulch is recommended but you can double check the ratios. It will also go back to living after a couple years just outside.

It will not be devoid of microorganisms. I guarantee that.

If it’s devoid of microorganisms, I’d wonder what nuclear material you’ve been working with.
