Work made a mistake and had to many people in one spot so I asked the boss for paint and supplies and started repainting the rusting and faded Barricades.

Was rolling along well and decided I sould get the back side as well since it was really rusting out and could bee seen when come in around the corner. As I'm painting my foot drops out from under me and I'm luckily reflexes kicked in and I failed my arms and fell off to the side some catching myself on the Barricade I had been painting.

After the bit of shock I check to see what happened. There is a good size hole about 4' x6' about 15' deep before the water that had it filled up its like some big sump pump thing. and has several feet of water I was told. Years ago it was covered with 2x boards and those board ahev been covered with dirt and aluminum chips and it looked like the rest of the concrete area. BUT the wood had rotted out giving way when I stepped on it.

Boss said he thought it was 20' to the top of the water and it holds at least 10 feet of water going by the amount of time it takes to drain with the flow out of the 6" pipe. Mys I don't think it was that far down to the top of the water.

I lucked out today not ending up in that hole. No way out, high enough to hurt and
likely deep enough to drown in. I expect I will be sore some in the next few days. With the new head of the plant I wonder how they will spin it to cause me some grief. Hopefully they will get it covered with a steel plate now.after I reported it.

Ask them if you should contact OSHA, or will they. I think your problem will disapear then.

You got very lucky, now why didn't they put a thick metal plate over a hole like that to begin with? Also a steel plate in an area like that should be checked every few months to see if it's rusting out. Sounds like they went with the cheapest and fastest way to temporarily fix a problem. If they covered it like that it should have been noted to fix with a permanent solution in the near future. Sick your Union on them.

You would think they would put some barricades around it or something.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Providence Farm, it sounds like your job site is just one big how many OSHA violations can you spot training film based on the things you mention. I would think their safety record is horrible, and they would have investigators breathing down their neck all the time. Glad you weren't hurt worse than you were.

It's a big old plant built in the 60's. Before it was split and part sold off there was 460 acres under roof not counting We also had our own Coal power plant.

There are a lot of things that have been done and forgot about well before The rules were put in place Often the improves may fix one issue but create a few more.

Boss said he was talking to someone that said they had been trying to get it approved to fix that correctly but had not been able to het it done so if that's is accurate it was a known issue. Boss told him he sould have more ammo to get it done now.

Didn't hear a thing last night but it was Sunday night. Maybe tonight?

That's scary! Glad you didn't fall in and are OK.

It's not always about catching fish. That's what people who don't catch fish usually say.
