How time have changed…..

I was planning to be a doctor and most likely a surgeon. In college, I had a 7:30am, English class, where the professor took attendance. Classes that early should be illegal in college. I had a brand new girlfriend, who I spent almost all night, every night with. I had a chemistry class at 11:00am, they didn't take attendance at. I was worn out from enjoying myself, so after the English class, I would go back to my dorm and sleep pass my chemistry class, until I met my girlfriend at 1:00pm for lunch. I missed a test and dropped the chemistry class, which is why I am not a doctor.

That's still over 400 miles. How long did it take to do it? Any good stories from the trip?

I knew a weird guy named Jimmy, who worked as a projectionist at one of the movie theaters we had an account with. He was probably 6' 5" and probably didn't weigh much over 135 pounds. He had a white man's fro of black hair, pale skin, huge nose and Groucho Marx looking glasses. Jimmy decided to hitchhike around the US on around $100.00. Jimmy was very smart and very odd. When he ran out of money, he bought a can of Alpo and a can of chipped beef. He sold the Alpo for a little less than he paid for it to a bum, to feed the bum's dog. He cleaned out the empty can of Alpo in a bathroom and put the chipped beef in it. He would sit outside of grocery stores eating chipped beef out of the Alpo can. Without him asking, people would give him money and food.

He eventually ended up in Phoenix, Arizona. Businesses wouldn't let him in because he was too scuzzy looking. The water faucets on houses mostly had locks on them, so he hadn't drank or eaten for a few days. He passed out in an alley in the morning. He woke up in the evening with a cop tapping him in the ribs with his foot. Jimmy ended up dry heaving on the cop's foot. The cop took him back to the station. He told the cops his story. They fed him, hydrated him and took up a collection to buy him a bus ticket back to Ohio. The cops gave him a ticket and a little money, dropped him off at the bus station and told him not to come back.

Jimmy had a lot of goid stories about crazy things he did.

My goal after high school was to get a job that would support a wife & kids which I did as an apprentice pipefitter/plumber with Local 85 then onto Dow Chemical.

Hunt deer in other states then Maine

I was debating military or tech school when I was in high school. The tech school representative got to me first, and I was enrolled in tech school to become a mechanic (UTI in glendale heights, Illinois) when I graduated. I graduated in June and moved to illinois in august, where I met my future wife within 3 weeks of moving out there. 16 months of schooling, and I started my first dealership job.

Own several American motorcycles and find my wife two jobs !

I'm still trying to decide. I graduated in 74

Apprenticeshipand travel around the country
Hunting deer and working.

Week before I left for school I asked a beautiful little brown hair blue eyed gal
On a date, I never became a lineman and do wildlife control full time and hunt deer all over the
Midwest. 20 years later and asking her on a date is still the best decision I ever made.

I wanted to build a 12 second street car

It just took 4 years ...and in 1978 ...I ran a 12.69 @ 108.88 mph

Well, I was in the last draft lottery and won!, lol, #1!.... between physicals and canceling the draft I went back to being a Bayman digging clams....did some other stuff but always, and still, work on the bay....

Get a job and survive, hunt and trap, school was not in my future. I did that until I met this little blonde, life changed and I am glad it did. I became a teacher, coach, still got to hunt and trap, with the best partner I could ask for.

Actually, in 1964 when I graduated, goals were less defined for many whereas direction more so I think. I sort of boiled them down into 3 common paths guys took in my neck of the woods.
1. Go to college for either education or deferment (draft dodger)
2. Get a job with either Buick, GM, or Dow and wait for your draft notice.
3. Get a job, get married, wait for a kid, and wait for your draft notice.
