Make money and girls. Bounced around a few jobs Started collage for a social science education degree. Got in the Ironworker Apprenticeship and decided I would make more doing that than being a teacher of history so after a year dropped out when I got the Apprenticeship. Became a journeyman did that untill I started where I'm at now.
Defined goals Goals after highschool Never really had them wish I had But then I would have misses out on some experiences.

Worked in a foundry for a couple years. Then started college, but got drafted into the army after my first quarter. Couldn't get a student deferment since I had just started college.
It's not always about catching fish. That's what people who don't catch fish usually say.

In 1968, I was a geeky kid with thick glasses and no desire to be drafted. So, I enlisted in the Navy to avoid being drafted. Spent 6-weeks working in a hospital laboratory. Got out early and decided college would be a good use of my GI Bill. Not being good in school followed me there but I found a public health program I liked and made a career out of it.

My dream was to trapp and work outdoors in the off season. For the most part I've lived that dream with the exception of a few temporary indoor jobs.

This is a very malicious thread. Vinke knows darn well most southern trappers never finished high school. Shame on him!

My goal after High School was to trap fur in the wilderness of Alaska. I was born and raised in the big city of Anchorage, after I graduated HS, in 1971, I moved to the interior of Alaska to trap. I had no desire to attend college, was registered for the draft and just figured if they called me up I'd go. they never called me.

That's still over 400 miles. How long did it take to do it? Any good stories from the trip?
I knew a weird guy named Jimmy, who worked as a projectionist at one of the movie theaters we had an account with. He was probably 6' 5" and probably didn't weigh much over 135 pounds. He had a white man's fro of black hair, pale skin, huge nose and Groucho Marx looking glasses. Jimmy decided to hitchhike around the US on around $100.00. Jimmy was very smart and very odd. When he ran out of money, he bought a can of Alpo and a can of chipped beef. He sold the Alpo for a little less than he paid for it to a bum, to feed the bum's dog. He cleaned out the empty can of Alpo in a bathroom and put the chipped beef in it. He would sit outside of grocery stores eating chipped beef out of the Alpo can. Without him asking, people would give him money and food.
He eventually ended up in Phoenix, Arizona. Businesses wouldn't let him in because he was too scuzzy looking. The water faucets on houses mostly had locks on them, so he hadn't drank or eaten for a few days. He passed out in an alley in the morning. He woke up in the evening with a cop tapping him in the ribs with his foot. Jimmy ended up dry heaving on the cop's foot. The cop took him back to the station. He told the cops his story. They fed him, hydrated him and took up a collection to buy him a bus ticket back to Ohio. The cops gave him a ticket and a little money, dropped him off at the bus station and told him not to come back.
Jimmy had a lot of goid stories about crazy things he did.
Keith Met some nice people along the way,, and a couple that got thumped. Pretty lady that said she needed to make a stop in Grand Island,,,, she pulled into a motel. That went well….. Gay dude that stopped at the rest area,,,,, That did not go well for him,,,,, he got thumped…. I stayed clean and had a credit card…. Colorado Rockies was the hardest place to get a ride ,,,,,, but it was a 18 state for 3.2 Elks club somewhere west off Gorgetown feed me and gave me work for as long as I wanted and a shack out back to sleep. Made enough to walk back home, and pay my bill getting there ,,,,, stuff wasn’t dog friendly back then… A couple years later, after a summer in WY,, I drove my beat up W100 to CA and met my wife…a few year later after getting out of Compton.... the rest is history I would check in with my folks every so often to let them know I was alive. (They put life insurance on me at 15 to cover my funeral costs,,) Back then long distance was expensive,,,,,, So to overcome the cost,,, we would all call collect…. Operator,,,,,, Hi will you accept a collect call from?,,,,,,, no….. Didn’t cost anything but you knew everything was good…..

To be successful in whatever I did and own a ranch. I can honestly say I achieved my dreams and then some. I have always believed you really can get to where you want to in life, but it takes a lot of hard work to get it. If You want something bad enough it can be done.
Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

I wanted to build a 12 second street car . It just took 4 years ...and in 1978 ...I ran a 12.69 @ 108.88 mph ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/04/full-22754-255007-img_20240713_115521271_hdr.jpg) In my 57 Chevy Station Wagon BA nessup!,! They would trailer cars in… I can remember tailgating my brother who had a 67 442 convertible ,,, I had my 70 442, basically pushing him down the road…my buddy crawled out the window, on to the hood,,,, and then leaped in my brother’s car to steal his beer,,,,lol… Mark was nuts….

My goals after high school were very weak compared to my buddy’ goals.
My buddy has a good work ethic. He was born very young.
He spent his youth on the run in a multi-state crime spree. Eventually he did 20 years on a chain gang in Mississippi where he really learned to work.
Next, he worked as a gandy dancer on the railroad for many years.
His next vocation was a gippo logger choking logs for a high line and helicopter cables in wilderness areas where he was severely injured and spent three months in a hospital and then spent another three months in a convalescent home.
Next he was straw boss of a night crew at a diamond mine in British Columbia. Because of on the job violence, he moved on.
So he became an indian agent on a reservation. Based upon lessons learned at the reservation, he sprang into wealth management and stock trading on Wall Street. From what he learned there he fished commercially for eels in a river in New York. Finally he settled on doing psychological counseling for Fortune 500 ceos and in his spare time volunteers picking up litter along the Appalachian trail.
