its not forgotten. Now deer hunters do a half hearted job of it, skipping the last couple steps, and call it hinge cutting.

When I was a kid, after reading "Robinson Crusoe", who built his forts by putting in living stakes, I directed my "troops" of neighbor kids in building forts with honey suckle cuttings, which we used like Asians use bamboo. After a good growing season, you couldn't get through the living walls of honey suckle we made.
