"According to Monzón’s research, about 64% of the eastern coyote’s genome is coyote (Canis latrans), 13% gray wolf (Canis lupus), 13% Eastern wolf (Canis lycaon), and 10% dog (Canis familiaris)."

No but after this study there will be coyotes that " identify as wolves".

You guys forget, there was a verified wild gray wolf killed in southern NY a couple years ago.

It was discussed on this forum. Also in the news.

Escaped from someone's possession? Or a wayward one.

Proven wild by forensic stool sampling used by biologists to separate out the "tame" wolf released vs confirmed wild.

Turtle,
I was born and grew up in NY until 53 years old. I know the BS that goes on there. Do a news search.

Yes, but it took 3 dna tests to get the results the pro wolf faction wanted.

NOT TRUE....though there are currently active bills in the NY Assembly and Senate proposing such. They will likely never get beyond committee but here in NY, who knows. The proposed law is poorly written and would be near impossible to enforce parts of it. For those interested, here is some information on the proposed bills directly from the NYS Senate website -

BILL NUMBER: S5402

SPONSOR: HOYLMAN-SIGAL

TITLE OF BILL:

An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in relation to protecting wolves

PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:

To provide additional protections for wolves migrating into New York State and to require the department of environmental conservation to collect genetic data on large canids in order to more fully understand
the presence of wolves in the state.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section one amends the environmental conservation law by adding a new section that includes the following provisions: Requires all wild canids (this includes coyotes and wolves) taken in the state to be checked and tagged; Requires DNA analysis be performed on taken canids that are over fifty pounds to determine if the canid is a wolf; if such a canid is determined to be a wolf, the DEC would impose a moratorium on canid hunting; the DEC shall submit a report to the legislature on the status of wolves in the state; and, the DEC shall modify its hunting and trapping training curriculum to include information on wolves and reflect
this legislation.

JUSTIFICATION:

Wolves are protected under federal and New York law as an endangered species. However, wolves migrating into New York have been mistaken by hunters for large coyotes and killed despite this existing legal
protection. Wolves are an important component in establishing and maintaining a biologically diverse ecosystem. In addition, studies conducted in Alaska and Canada have shown that wolves do not significantly diminish populations of animals important to hunters such as deer and moose and studies have also shown that the presence of wolves helps to control coyote populations. It is the purpose of this act to provide additional meaningful protections for wolves migrating into the state and to require the Department of Environmental Conservation to collect genetic data on large canids in order to more fully understand the presence of wolves in the state and provide information to the public according to these findings.

PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:

2023-2024: 57927 (Hoylman-Sigal), Died in committee

Here on the Island coyotes are just starting to get a foothold, but NY is protecting them here. No open season at all.....cause we just need to share space with them...... crazy

When all the small wild life is gone, they'll be eating folks cats and small dogs, we have a LOT of people here now...with cats and small dogs. Can't wait to see how much people love coyotes then....
