it's a lot easier to just open up the green castors and scrap out the contents and add glycerin or mineral oil to make a paste. The sac that contains the actual castor is of no value in making the lure.

Can’t go wrong with castor! Your stuff will catch. I only hang my castor for lure for about a day, then into the freezer. There’s lots of juice when I cut it up. Just whipped up a batch a few days ago too, but my little processor doesn’t chop it that fine, I spun it for about 5 min. Castor, tiny bit of beaver oil & anise, poplar bud oil and glycerin. I leave the castor out for food lures and add a couple other goodies.

I never added anything to my fresh castor other than glycerin. I want to keep my lure as natural as possible.

I have stopped adding any bud oils to my spring beaver lure as it tends to attract unwanted muskrats because our season is closed.

Castor lure / curiosity I assume. I will use it as I have my other heavy castor lures.

Sounds similar to my homemade recipe. I use cheap whiskey instead of vodka. It catches beaver well for me.
My wife calls my beaver-castor-only food processor a butthole grinder.

I get great results without griding and adding extra stuff.

Never dried out castor just to rehydrate it later on in the harder version of it. I grind it semi fresh preserve it and add glycerin to it different regions have different odors depending on main diet I believe is the driving factor.

I cut up,mince, or grind dry castor, and reconstitute it with sac oil, I wouldn’t want it to work better as I can’t keep up skinning as it is.

This is what I do, I've used green, semidry, and dried castor at different times. Really prefer semidry to work with, but I've made plenty with green castor over the years. Catch the first beaver of the season and pull my lure ingredients out of him. As you say, works well enough I have no need for better. I usually just cut mine up with a knife.

Yes,you can cut it up with a knife and add some to any old twenty year old jar you already have going…

I trapped with a guy who knew beaver. He stated that he must have caught 10,000 in his 89 years. He too separated the male form the female caster too. to him that was important.......jk

The sac that contains the actual castor is of no value in making the lure. This. Unless I decide to buy a bottle of Paul's Backbreaker, which I used to use for multiple species in Alaska, I do what Beav says, here. In fact, the last beaver i set for, I dug out a set of castors from last year that had been 90% dried and put in a zip-lock and into the freezer. I couldn't find my bottle of Backbreaker so thawed out the castor, scraped out the castor itself, and not having any glycerin on hand, took a tablespoon of Vaseline and melted it to a liquid with a heat gun on low, then mixed in the castor. This was this last December, and I made a single castor mound set, and the next morning had a giant 70# beaver. And that was far from the first beaver to fall for a plain castor lure, for me. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/02/full-6202-286188-20251215_144525.jpg)

A lot of times I’ll just dribble some of my lure from the waters edge up the trail to my tailgate and set there playing on my phone… and wait for them to come check it out, then I nose knock them on the way to my truck…

Looks like some of our beaver that come off of the White River other places we get the blonder ones. Some blonds some less red.
