After a few hours of driving and running the hills on public ground this morning and sticking out my 14 year old and I were on our way to try and roost some birds on a different closer piece of state land when we saw birds on the farm. So away we went and he took off on foot from the house. I decided to head back to the house figured one person can sneak easier. So I sat on the back porch and waited to hear the shot.

the Tom and hens would likely head to roost shortly and I didn't think it would take to long if he didn't get busted. seemed like a long time and I heard a shot than a call I got him.

He got close as he could under cover in the area he Thought they would head. He
called once hens came within 10 yards and he was worried about getting busted. The Tom was hanging up about 45 yards and with worrying about being busted he aimed where the pretty meets the ugly and shot with the Tom facing him. It flipped over backwards and flopped with head up some and it was over. He packed it back to the house. It lost some of its tail feathers flopping. 20 g 3" federal tss #9 now to find out if it all passes through and if the breast is all shot up.

A few strands went a little over 12" spurs were 1 1/16"

My youngest 12 missed not one but 2 today. had 3 more stalks that didn't pan out. After Easter lunch at grandma's he was done for the day.

First one he took a vent rib 870 youth with tss choke and tss shot. it was 35 yards I think he keep his head up and didn't look down the barrel. Told him to hunt with the gun with red dot the rest of the day
the 2nd one he missed he cut loose on running away at 60 yards. I got on to him for that. I think he was trying to make up for missing by missing more.

Had a laugh thought I would share here instead of making a new thread it's not new thread worthy.

My wife posted the two pictures above I'm guessing on Facebook. Her friend replied "Oh, so cool Is that a pheasant?" I really got a kick out of her having no clue. In her defense she does live in Australia but seriously surprising someone would not have a clue on the difference.

Pheasants were introduced in Australia, like they were in the US. They farm turkeys in Australia, like they do here too.

Congratulations to your son on getting a nice tom.

12 year lod called. wife took him and his brother up to a piece of public land we have never turkey hunted. a they called in a Tom with his beard almost dragging the ground within 35 yards but it stayed just on the other side of the line on private ground. when tjay played out they relocated to the other side of the property I sent my wife a map with droped pin suggesting where to go.

They saw birds way out in a field. walked way around and through the woods and at them from the other side. They got close birds spooked and he shot a jake running away at 60 yards. ai asked him how he knew it was a Tom running away at 60 yards he sai becues it was the one with red head.

It was a flopper and he stomped it to get it to stop so it was pretty tore up but he got his bird.
.

edit. when he went to discard the carcass the dog got the little spurs.

Finally got a picture sent to me.

Notice this when I walked through the house this morning. Big trophy bird and what was left after the dog got the "spurs" This makes my 12 year olds 3rd turkey.
