They definitely are the right way to go in some instances. I was made a believer in them alot of years ago. We were bear hunting up in Canada in early Fall, mosquitos were horrendous like always. At night you could literally see a clear bubble of air around each person holding a unit. Just a black haze in the air outside the "chemical" halo around you.

They work great for mosquitoes but I still need pure vanilla extract, liberally applied and reapplied every 30-45 minutes to keep gnats off me.

We had bought a couple of them before a fishing trip to Minnesota. We had a cabin in the woods back in a shallow water mossy cove. Had a nice deck on the back probably 8x24 but in the evenings you could hardly see through the cloud of mosquitoes out there. We put them two thermocells out there and within 10 min the entire deck was free of mosquitoes, we sat out there and played cards for hours and not a single bite. Now if I'm outside in the evenings in the summer I'm not far from one of these things.

Can get a can of butane for 4 or 5 bucks that will fill dozens of the Thermacell canisters.
