Contemplating here. Small tag along trailer for trapping. On road/off road, the typical woods road, farm field, back pasture type off road not the technical rock crawl off road but soft ground beaver swamp adjacent might be encountered. The kind of stuff we drive on.

So assuming all things being equal size, payload, same tow vehicle, etc. Tandem vs Single axle?

It sounds like for what you're going to be using it for a single axle would suit you best. You can unhook and turn them around by hand if you're in a tight spot. Can't do that with a tandem.

I ran a small 5x8 single axle trailer behind my truck this year for setting and pulling muskrat floats and it was a dream not having to climb into the back of the truck to grab them out. Around here, I don't see them being practical for k9 trapping and the such. But if I were you, I would go with the lightest trailer possible so if you do have to unhook them, you can turn them around easier.

Have a 5.5 x10 single axle aluminum trailer that is really light, and pulls well behind a Toyota Tacoma and a Honda Pioneer 700 SxS.

Worried at first about the durability of aluminum, but it has held up well to hauling beaver & gear....Moving it by hand is no problem.

Single axle, with leaf springs, if you drag it the places I do you will eventually break and need to replace springs. But if you don't have springs on it, you will have already rattled and broken it apart long before you break the springs. I've not seen aluminum trailers hold up long bouncing around through rocks and ruts, myself. Think about running a little wider tires on it if you are going to be towing it in any mud (assuming you aren't worried about snow in Georgia) those narrow tires that come so often on small trailers will cut right down through soft ground. Also be aware that even small trailers are a boat anchor behind your truck, they can be very handy, but they can easily get you stuck if you aren't paying attention to where you are dragging them.

If you're going to put very many miles on it, put radial car tires on it when you wear out your first set of trailer tires, you will get a lot more miles out of them, plus they are wider than most trailer tires.

Will also add - Normally grease pack the bearings twice a season if beaver trapping and pulling through water....No rocks here much, but low swampland and farm roads.

When I was trapping western Ky going from one farm to another, I pulled a 8' single axle behind a Jeep Wrangler (2 door). My daily catch and 350 ATV fit OK but it was hard to get enough tongue weight to keep the swaying in check. It was a tilt trailer and a 10' with a ramp would have worked lots better with the ATV. The extra length would have helped get more weight ahead of the axle, more room for catch and gear, and the ramp would have been a big plus. Full size wheels and tires are a must, none of those 10" wheels.
