I think I’ve seen where people have mounted their phone on a gun and basically been able to aim based on the screen. Is this a thing?

yes it is a phone mount to the scope , they use it for visually impaired and as a cheap form of night vision

I think they are intended more for spotting scopes but same principal it may not take recoil well
