Planting them is the easy part but the mouse guards and making and staking cages is a pain in the butt. I got about 25 in this afternoon after they were delivered. I am headed to a buddies hunting property in the morning to put another 25 in there. It will be interesting to see what sort of survival rate I got on the ones I planted there last year. They never got cages or watered, just sort of let nature take its course on those.

Since you're planting them directly where you want the saplings to grow, I would prune them back by a third or a little more. That will reduce stress and make it easier for the roots to support the tops.

I am in the process of potting up 500 trees and have 400 more, that will likely arrive tomorrow. I should get my nursery inspection next week. My partner on this new business and I, got our LLC back on the Sunday before Easter.

Most are pruned back pretty hard and the root systems require a substantial hole. I have always been happy with the stock I have gotten from this outfit. Once they get tall enough that the deer can't bust the tops out of them, then they will get a haircut.

It's good that they are pre pruned. It seems like it would make good sense to pre prune, to save on shipping too, but most sellers don't do it, probably because of the labor and because the trees look better unpruned, even though they will do better if pruned.

Who did you order from?

Yellow River Nursery out of Wisconsin. I have always been very happy with the trees I have gotten from them. These are all for the "critters" so I got Antonvka, Domestic crabs, Dolgo's, Midwest and White Siberians. My order with "my" trees will be another week or so. It will have Zestars, Harolred, Sweet Sixteens, Hazen's, Prairie Spry's, Honeycrisp and a few others. These will be 6-8 foot trees and many will produce some apples the first year, but are far more expensive.

Sending money to Tampon Tim every year makes me feel good about myself. He gets money from me for anything that drives, floats or follows along behind.

I would love to! It would save me around $500 per year for licenses on snowmobiles, ATV's, boats, fish houses, trailers, etc. The problem is that the Possum Cops are so impressed with your indepence that they give you an award. Sometimes they even give it to you in front of a judge if you are lucky enough.

The deer and grouse eat the apples that fall from them. I like deer that are too fat to run.
