So it's time to shop for freezers again.. In the last few years I bought a small chest because it was what was available during the covid shortage. The seal stinks won't stay in place and ice forms around the top due to that.
The other is a non frost free 23' and it's seal also stinks.

We have another smaller 13' we have had over 16 years and not had a problem others than it getting stuck on defrost and thawing everything out once and is why I bought the non frost free large. one.

All work but I want to replace the 2 with bad seals and don't want another problem.


Anyone have any brands or models they have had good luck with. I think The old ones must be better quality.

I like the small ones. We bought two a few years back and I like them a lot. One for meat, other for everything else. They were pretty inexpensive at less than $200 each at Lowe’s and my thought is if one craps out I’m not out much money and it’s small enough I can haul it out of basement to curb myself. They aren’t very heavy when empty. I got them downstairs myself new. Yes these were bought like Covid era too. Hot point is brand. Very simple and they work.
I ran two circuits to this little area they are sitting in so each has own circuit plug for load protection.

Anyway, that’s what I have and I like this setup.

My fur freezer in garage was a workhorse. Bought that 13 years ago for $100 from my brother in law. He had it five years when he sold it to me, and it worked right up to this past winter and I finally gave it to the neighbor kid for his fur freezer. He has it plugged. In their garage and it’s still running. That was a hot point too but older and larger model.

You can replace the seals. If that's all that's wrong with them, that is what I would do.

I considered this but they have never been quite right and the large up rights top shelfs want to fall out of place. Wife suggested digging a hole to bury the chest freezer in a shady spot to make a root cellar out of it.

Typically I'm all for fixing things but with cow ready to pick up and never being satisfied with these I'm wanting to replace them.

My state has a surplus auction. Lots of freezers appear on the bid pages. Most are from universities. Check to see if your state does the same.

Can't really recommend a brand but stay away from LG. Had a 2 year old fridge go out last September and no parts available. We ended up spending 1800$ for a new fridge and they're still saying they're going to fix our old one but can't get the parts they need.

If they can't get the parts they should replace it with a new one right off. Sad customer service for sure.

I just run whatever freezers I can find. I currently have 4 with 3 plugged in at the moment 1 for skunk stuff 1 for glands and urine type stuff both smaller then a big one with carcass bait items and random pelts the last is a spare one as it’s needed. Have another in the house for our food items.

I never spent over $50 for a fur shed freezer so I’m not out anything if it goes belly up I process the important item right way to avoid the chance of any major loss if a freezer goes down I’m not out much that way. I’m in the skunk freezer often with trapping them the year around the carcass freezer is packed so it has a cushion with the blocks of frozen meats.

The other gland/urine one is on its way out it was in the fire so that one I keep a close eye on the lid freezes down the insurance guy said the fire fumes destroy the freezer and refrigerator motors. The fridge died the first few months the freezers hanging in there still.

The small chest freezer is now trash. I cut into the cord through the wire ring coating when moving it.

I'm not willing to splice it and deal with insurance liability. didn't like it anyway.

Talking with my wife both of the freezers I want to replace where bought at covid time when you could not find them. the large upright was from a scratch and dent place . I had forgotten about the large dent in the side on the back untill I moved the small chest freezer today. that one is a Frigidaire

I'm just guessing the quality wrnt to heck during covid. I'm off as soon as I fix a coffee to go and likely to buy the nicest upright at the store. But a larg chest may be nice for chickens for our customers so it depends on what is in stock I guess.

Put an ad in your local market place. I picked up 3 freezers for $50,2 were free,the people wanted them gone.

I need to get one in and in place this weekend. Cow was ready ot pick up on wensday. I'm much more concerned about longevity and functioning more than price. My 2 newest freezers are crap and the 20 + year old one is running like a champ.

Makes me nervous about buying a new one. But I have had old ones go out and it's a stinking mess. And if you figure what this cow cost and losses if one goes out...

Conventional wisdom says buy new VS. Experience says new stuff is junk. Same with vehicles.

I picked up a garage ready chest freezer last summer for crab bait..sits in an outside shed, so far so good..... No idea how long it's going to last, not built like the old ones.

I have two big upright freezers. One I bought about ten years ago, the other I recently picked up for free. Both were built in the 70's. The one I bought ten years ago has been running in an unconditioned shed that gets pretty hot in the summer. So far no issues. I suspect the other one will be just as good when I finally hook it up in the new fur shed.

Both will probably outlast me. They were still building them to last in the 70's.

Check Marketplace, Craigslist and/or local ads for one of those.
