Get to the roost area before sunup it’s a game changer that’s my favorite set up but when they get hot you can get them anytime of day.

Well it turns out I was pretty wrong. Funny the things you never questioned because that's what you were told.

Today I learned Jakes can be gobbling at 1 year old, but more commonly as they get older (I had to look it up)

Maybe don't listen to me snowy smile

You can often tell a Jake because it lacks the thunder of a gobbler but the worse calls I’ve ever heard came from a live turkey you never know.

Next look up the average life expectancy of a wild turkey. Usually around 3 years for a hen and 4 years for a tom.

You’re good though bud, we don’t know what we don’t know. Always trying to learn.

Heck, I don’t know much about anything.

I hunt them at the grocery store. Already dressed and ready to cook for less cost than a tag here in KS.

So, you think they are just with hens and hard to pull away or what??

In this statement here the ole hen likely spoiled your plans of a turkey dinner. Lots of scenarios could have taken place for the reason the tom would not come any closer .He could of have been in a strut zone where he will stand a gobble till a hen comes to him . Sometimes silence is golden if he is hung up. Maybe change calls .Scratch leave.I have left and came back a couple hrs later when the hens have left cluck and purr and have him dead in an hour. Turkeys are dum in the Fall and winter but once the spring hits here there psychology degree kicks in hard. Each turkey you kill will most likely be from something you learned from from the ones that kicked you butt.

LOL
Turkeys being turkeys. If they could smell no man would ever kill one.

Have come to be of the opinion that I need to find a tom that is interested or it will not matter what I do.

Figure out where they are roosting at night, then be there first thing in the morning and call them off the roost is how I have my best luck this time of the year. Tough to get them to leave hens when they got a mess of them.

Also if you know where they roost, you can set up in the afternoon before they get there. (Depending on your state rules and shooting hours).

I carried up a folding chair and sat up in the cedars hidden really well. Rough country and up about midway from bottom ground. Just need one to commit they respond to call right now.

Find where they roost and kill them first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening. Thought this was turkey hunting 101. We always put them to bed the night before the hunt and snuck in close the next morning setup the decoy and called them in when they came down off the roost.

Another trick is to get in there close to where they roost before they fly up at night.after there roosted make a bunch of noise scare/scatter them so they fly away hopefully in different directions next morning be set up where they had roosted before you scattered them and do some soft calling alot of times they will come running to get back with the hens.

Well, a month ago they were roosting along the river edge. I haven't looked as of late though. That is only about 200 yards from where I been sitting to hunt. There was about 25 to 30 roosting then.

The object of doing what I described is to get the flock scattered so the Tom's and hens aren't roosted together so the next morning there all not together when they fly down makes the Tom's easier to call when the hens aren't right there with them.
