Did it just wear off or peel off?

Peeled off. Might have been my trap prep, but I do not think so.

I just use FMJ like wax. I dip over top of the die or dipped trap. I dipped last summer and I ain't treating those traps this summer, held up well. Some were used all summer ADC and into fall/winter/spring beaver trapping.

Does the FMJ also darken the traps or just wax them?

I use FMJ and wax interchangeably. The FMJ holds up better and protects the trap, also not as prone to picking up scent as wax. Wax works a little better for freeze/thaw. The only thing I don’t like about FMJ is it gets a funny look if the traps sit in water

Used speed dip for years. Tried Full metal jacket two years ago. Won't go back.

Did you mean you won’t go back to FMJ or to Speed Dip?

I use speed dip and dilute to about half the recommended amount. I get good coverage and for most water sets it holds up for 2-4 years. When coons get caught they need to be re dipped. On a nice hot August day they dry in a very, very short time and I don't get any of those thick globs. I file all the tips of the dogs, and the pan slots.

I used speed dip one time on all my traps more or less to give them a protective coating. Went to use some for land trapping and found out that it wasn't a great idea. For my water traps that was fine but not for others. Just my opinion. Haven't tried full metal jacket.

Clint Locklear was the originator of FMJ if I remember right. He would say if you used it for water trapping it would turn the water milky.
