Not really. .Old pawn shop 22 single shot. rifle with shorts or CB caps is plenty good enough. And the coon in the cage isn't going anywhere.
I watched my dad put down hogs for butchering with a .22 short behind the ear.

But by all means, buy yourself a .22 magnum also. More is better right?

Sorry, but what else do you do with them? I think the owner does a pretty good job keeping them out

Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.

I think it would work just fine... But I don't have a Benelli Nova Tactical so I don't know for sure. And if it was in a tree, a shotgun would be a whole lot better than the TCP because your .45 or 9mm round is going to sail through the air for a long while before landing somewhere and possibly injuring someone or something. just my two cents whistle

No offense sir but by your comments about whether a shotgun is accurate enough to hit a coon at 20 yds and needing a 22 mag to adequately kill a coon I'd assume your very novice with firearms. Coon in a trap can be dispatched humanely with a moderately powerful pellet gun.

Don't turn this into a dispatch thread.

Use marshmallows and cage them. If your cat gets in it is an easy and safe release and the cat will most likely not get caught again. I have set cages in lots of dairy barns and cats are a norm. I only had one cat I caught 3 times.

No offence taken and yes, I am a novice with firearms and I've never trapped. For me firearms are similar to fire extinguishers. You don't expect to need one until there's a fire. The night the coon was in my tree was the first time I felt I needed one.

I should have used the word pattern instead of accurate. But after searching, turns out barrel length doesn't affect pattern.

Sorry everyone, I'll do more searching before asking newbie questions. Like mentioned earlier by CoyoteCowboy, the shotgun would be safer when the raccoon is up in a tree even though homes are about a half mile apart in this area.

So you are not a trapper by admission, yet you identify as a trapper and you don't know much about firearms and know very little about wildlife. Just curious, what is your real reason for joining our community here Spaz ?

you need to pattern shotguns at any distance you intend to shoot and know what it does.

a shotty can work for almost everything although not ideal for many things

the thing about fire extinguishers is they work a lot better when you know how to use them , where to aim them , how to work a fire

guns are no different , but the range and complexity is greater so more training gets better results

Give him a break Bob. He sounds legit.
Spaz, you're in Iowa somewhere. You could hook up with Coonman. He's an old coon trapper.

I've seen that too,but one night I watched our cat coming across the yard to our door looking nervously over her shoulder, about 20' behind her was a large coon and that coon was stalking her, paid no attention to me whatsoever,he was totally fixated on the cat.I personally wouldn't trust them if I still had a cat.
