Snowy,

What about sitting in that blind patiently, calling sparingly and softly? The blind you posted pics of a few days ago with all those gobblers strutting in front of....

Looks to me like you've got that blind in a strut zone.

I have a buddy who scouts big ol toms every bit as hard as trophy hunters get after deer. He liked to find one on s tail cam and is convinced he can pick it out of the crowd later.

His set up is a pair of hen decoys and a confidence decoy. A crane decoy if there is a waterway in site, a dove or 2 on a barbed wire fence, a crow on a hay field, etc.

He says they seldom hang up but admits to being coy with the call.

I set it up and never sat in it. If I spent all day in there, I would most likely have one wake by. There is a heavy traveled game trail that leads up in a canyon and a lot of game use it as a corridor for traveling. I might have to make the time and use it.

I've killed more birds after noon then in the morning. Sleep in then go out around 11Am. Let those birds do their thing. Those toms are still looking for love and they will be more receptive to your calling.
I hardly use decoys and I'm not into a lot of calling. And when I do call Its soft purrs and clucks. And maybe 45 min between calls.

The bird I killed on Thursday gobbled once answering my call. It was a long way off I could hardly hear him, and it took him about an hour to get to the kill site. I only called once more and that was to answer a jake that was out in front of me. I think that tom was on his way to kick some jake butt.
The tom weighed in at 24lbs and had a 9" beard.

All good advice on here. Turkey hunting can be without a doubt, the most frustrating or the most enjoyable outdoor pastime to participate in. Keep the faith and find a method you are happy with.

You should hear them gobbling before they fly down if your that close and they are still roosting there. Figure out what direction they normally head when they fly down and get closer. Easy to call in if your are in the direction they are heading anyway.
Roost them one night kill them next morning.

I dont quite understand why you wouldn't hunt where you know they strut (and you now have a blind there). Are you just trying to make it harder? Need the challenge?

Well, no but I am way up higher from the blind I can see the heavy game trail from where I have sat. It seems the brids are all up higher mid noon time. I think the hens are most of their nests up in the heavy cover and tree up higher. So, I thought it would be better getting a lot closer. Having they answer isn't a problem.

I could get a flight out to Montana ASAP and help you out.

Working together...we might could kill all of those strutters...if it's legal.

If I get a bird to answer me I give him a couple of minutes then cluck and yelp again, hoping he will gobble again and has closed the distance. If he answers and has closed I purr and work leaves until he shows. If he doesn't show in 30 to 45 minutes I use a peacock call to try and get him to shock gobble so I know if he's coming or going. If going, he's with hens and it will take a couple of hours before he breeds them and comes searching for me. If he shock gobbles a very long way off I will close the distance 100 to 200 yards, set a decoy, then cluck, purr, and work leaves about every 30 mins until he shows or I get bored and go home. They are so mood driven that they can be very frustrating.

We still have a lot of season, I would think as more hens get bred and go broody then the toms will have to do more looking. Just a matter of time, you'll get one
