LT GREY trapper Joined: Apr 2007 Central Ohio	Catalpa caterpillars are larva of the Sphinx moth So are tomato 'worms', tobacco 'worms' and 'them-there worms' that eat the Moon flower plant. All are larva of the Sphinx moth . . .just a different type. Still Sphinx. And . . .all are equally attractive to fish , due to their color, smell and that tasty neon-green goo that comes out when you run the point of a hook through one. You don't need to plant Catalpa trees to get fish bait, when Moon flowers , which grow in one season, will have the same result. I can collect nearly hundred caterpillars each summer from my Moon flower plants and one plant will give you thousands of seeds for next years harvest.

Preacherman Les trapper P Joined: Dec 2006 AR	They can get large, very large. The one in the background behind the house is larger than the one in foreground. A third is off to the right out of view. It has an active bee hive in it. Between the 3 of them they will make a white carpet of dropped blossoms. Strangely some years the worms will hit one tree but not many on the others.

There were two massive ones here in town and they would bloom like crazy but never saw a worm on them during my 59 years. The smaller trees in that yard and the other yards would get hammered. both of those old ancient trees died three years ago in that massive heat wave and drought. been cut down now. the other ones are still there. my main source for them on about 1 acres in town.

I've seen that as well. Some get hit regular others not at all. Like you observed it's the ones in town that don't. I suspect it's the soil or more properly lack of that is why. At least that's my guess.

I'd bait trotlines with them and catch bass, crappie, carp, gar turtles, and catfish. I didn't mind the carp as they became trotline bait, lol.
