Yesterday I rode up to a small cattle operation to check for coyote sign was told that they had a couple calves killed. I have trapped this place a couple times with success.i rode to the back field called the rye grass field.I stoped before I reached the edge and walked up to see if there was anything in the field .I see a coyote across the field walking the tree line It moved up the edge and then off to the woods.To.my surprise I looked back in the middle of the field and here comes a much bigger coyote walking the same direction but clearly hunting I am guessing grass hoppers . It took him awhile but he eventually left the field from a completely different area than the other.just before taking off to find where they exited the field I see another coyote doing the same thing as the last but worked his way around to go back the way he came from exiting in a different direction. This is about 8 am.Our coyotes should be denied up and feeding pup now .All that to asked what is going on .I could see this in the winter but kinda surprised to see it this time of year.Your thoughts

You came across 3 coyotes hunting. I wouldn't over think it. I've actually been seeing more coyotes during day light hours in the last month or so. Growing pups need lots of food and no hunting pressure.

Denned up coyotes caring for pups still need to hunt and get food.

Sounds to me like you found a good area for half a dozen traps or so.

If there’s no pressure (farm ground around town usually) the coyotes here will hunt all day. Even see coyotes and some red fox laying out in fields off the roads just outside of town all times of the day. If they feel safe they will hunt as much as they can to feed the extra mouths.

could well be I have caught several very young coyotes on that farm. What threw me off was they were in the same area and not together. I am going in. Next weekend to setup.

Yes the back field is pretty secluded.

Why do you need schooled, youve’ve trapped it with success as you’ve stated. Do what you did before with success!

I hope so Mr.Fales.i was curious as to why the coyotes were doing what they were doing not seemingly being together at this time of the year.I read somewhere it says.A few want to know why. 😉

Thoughts ?

The coyotes will end up in the same pasture with the herd no matter where you saw them.
Wherever the majority of the cattle are you can bet the coyotes will be right there with them
I would concentrate on the downwind edge of that pasture, or just outside it.
Wile E. & crew will work the herd nightly if they are close by. You can bet on it

You might consider showing them something a little different this time around.
It might snag the adults that saw your hand on your last visit.

Good Luck this weekend SK.

Unfortunately there is rain in the forecast this weekend. But I am still going, there are 3 culvert road crossings from the back field to the front that I intend on setting . I am going to drag up some old bones and make a flat set or 2 with them as attractant and some lure added.will see what happens.
