One of the first baits I used. The smell of it brings back good memories.

I have a loooooong history with Blackies.
Fur king, night bandit, deathwind (and the now extinct deathwind 2, which was deathwind with a little skunk added) were excellent. In particular situations brown buck was tremendous on greys.
That said, I haven't bought any in years. Still a lot of 4 ounce bottles in the shed.

worked as well last year as it did 20 years ago

Welches or Blackies Blend made by the same person just different formulas

Kind of sad irony to have a coon lure called Moneymaker these days. frown

He sold some darn good lure ingredients also. I bought alot of 4 oz and a few pints of his ingredients over the years and was impressed good price and great quality. I always enjoyed talking to Joanne seemed like real nice person on the phone and always remembered my name.

…Mrs Sharon drew a pic of a cat I caught for his catalog years ago … I haven’t tried his lures but I think I’ll give fur king a go next season

His lures were very good in my opinion. Two cooks can follow the same exact recipe and their product will smell and taste differently. I wonder sometimes when the originator makes a lure with their name on it the same care goes into it when it passes one or two hands. That cat cover was my favorite Blackies catalog.

You almost want to stick a spoon in it and grab a mouthful.

Carrol Black was pretty good about writing me response letter when I sent him a letter with questions. I actually started using his stuff way back when because of that.
I have to credit him for teaching me to use fish for coyotes. He was spot on. For me it was a double kick because back then a decent boar coon brought good money, and so did coyotes. I was surprised at how many coyotes I was picking up when I used ground carp for bait at dirtholes. His fresh ground fish bait was a great bait too. I caught everything at dirtholes on that stuff.
He also taught me a trick I still use today. When a dirthole isn’t producing and sits for a long time, jam a stick into the hole (leave the bedded trap alone) and put a squirt of pee or a small smear of gland lure on the stick and turn the set into a post set. Got a ton of coyotes that way over the years. Sometimes they just are not interested in bait but the territorial angle of a post set works when the other set type doesn’t, and what a simple conversion of a set without much effort.
Thank you Carroll Black.
Jim
