I use 50:50 mix. Just let them soak longer if they aren't clean enough. I'm in mid process of doing some used traps right now, and happened to take some pictures. 18 gallon tote, 1 dozen traps, 2 gallons vinegar, and however much water it takes to cover the traps. I let them soak for 5 days, then just pressure washed them off. You could also use a wire brush if you had to. I have had good success cleaning painted, dipped, FMJ'd, dyed, and waxed traps. I have a bucket sitting next to my wash station that has 4 gallons water and 1 box of baking soda to neutralize the vinegar. Dip and soak the traps in there for 10 mins, hang to dry, and they are ready for whatever treatment you choose. Soak and wash set up: ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/04/full-7971-256389-img_0084.jpg) Before: ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/04/full-7971-256390-123_2.jpeg) After: ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/04/full-7971-256391-img_0085.jpg)

Once cleaned with vinegar and neutralized they will get a light coat of rust real fast when left outside. Two nights tops especially if it's dewy out. They need slight rust/wear to get the factory sheen off to accept the chemical process of dyeing with tannins

That will take dye well.

No water added here, etching metal not making pickled eggs. Rust is the enemy. I do not rust traps to treat them to prevent rust. Trucks too. Guns? Yikes.

I agree, no reason at all to remove all that light surface rust. Vinegar is way over used.

That will take dye well. Yes they would. I like to strip used traps down back the bare metal. Makes welding on them easier. Also, I just wax. No dye jobs for me anymore.

Here’s a question….do you then have to re-rust them to take on new dye? Or is that a myth that they need rust.. Steel needs to be etched for dye to stick. Dusting them with a sandblaster or sanding them would provide the same results. No need to re-rust those traps as the steel is already etched. The most important thing in this scenario is neutralizing the (acid) vinegar.
