My splitter can split anything I throw at it I know them trees are goners. I did not expect the one posted to even bud out but it did I’ll plant some new ones trees out here don’t get very old as trees go. Cottonwoods are normally the biggest trees cedars do well the other stuff on the prairie are short term trees.

From what I am seeing in our area with the ash, trees can stand a long time while dieing and dead. Elm is a stringy type wood so the main stem could stand for a long time if one will let it.

that ash tree has some root rot and those beetles are going into that area and tunneling, you will see some punky wood when you cut it open
Ash are really subsequal to spray drift as the leaves come out in May-June
EAB go for the top branches and the woodpeckers clean these up and you can see the tunnels under the bark exposed.....the 2 or 3rd year larvae they go into the deeper wood to overwinter

Red elm can stand for years and years and never rot. White Elm will go bad in under a year even when standing. White needs cut and stacked and covered, around here its called pizz elm ( that is ss not zz ). Red Elm is best and most sought after fire woods here. I bet 50% of people here will take it over red or white oak.

I lost around 350 large white ash trees on my farm to emerald ash borer, starting in around 2013. I had 7 trees live through it, but the borers came back and at least one of those 7 is now dead. When the ash trees were dying they put much of their energy into seeding. I ended up with well over 1000 ash seedlings growing large and now dying too. The seedlings started dying last year and now most are dead. I probably should just drop all the white ash trees.

The green ash trees show some damage, but most survive.

I was surprised by the large number of ash we had in the forests surrounding my place in southeast PA. I never took much notice until they started dying. I've had the larger ones milled into slabs for wood shop projects and have been cutting the smaller ones into firewood for years. There are still dozens standing dead on my property.

There were so many that their loss changed the forests from open mature to choked with shrubs and bushes in areas.

A large one fell on my truck and totaled it two years ago.

Norway Spruce are now having a tuff rime over here.

Spruce bud worms?

I did Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) on 25 acres of ash about 20 years ago. The property owner did not pull the trigger on an ash harvest, so this winter, I cut 20/25 cord of firewood from the dead ash.

just about every tree, around here has something attacking it spruce bud, ash, elm, oak, jack pine, balsam, last year the poplar

Not sure what type of tree this is but this is the longest surviving tree along the lake last one standing everything else has eroded over since the flood several years ago even the big cottonwood trees are down. I planted willows away from the house by the lake and they were uprooted too.
