A friend of mine has about a dozen of these and we were wondering what they are.No markings on pan and seem to be about a number 2 size. They don’t seem very heavy duty and probably would end up with the pan being ripped off if used for coyote.

That round jaw face is a Montana feature. That and the strong springs make it the nastiest trap to get pinched by. The jaws penetrate and will draw blood. Yes the round don't cut but I won't buy any more unless they are laminated and/or offset. Wide flat with rounded edges is the better jaw.

Low lever Montgomery dogless. If it has a 6 inch jaw spread it is a #3. You have to tack the gap where the pan mounts on the frame with a welder to keep it from being removed by coyotes. The Montanas are a copy of the later high lever version of the Monty dogless.

Properly modified the high lever 3 and 4 Monty dogless are about as good as it gets for coyotes.

I’m pretty sure they are #2s.My friend was living in Arizona and remembers paying 50 cents for them. Are they good for anything? I like #2 Victor square jaw for muskrat but these might be overkill.

Looks like it would be a fun mod to get some bridger high lever replacements and deck them out.

Montgomery. They are a good trap as long as the dog less notch isn't worn to much.

When the notch wears out you build it up and recut it. However, this isn’t required often unless someone gets overzealous with the file.

Modify these traps as per Glen Sterling/ O’Gorman and they are bullet proof. I increase the lamination and offset and it makes them all the better. If you start with a #9 wire laminated trap, simply add another #9 on top of it. If starting from scratch, use 1/4” cold rolled. Increase offset to 1/4”.
