Bought an old tractor out in a pasture. Was eager to get it running so didn't do all the necessaries. Got it running and it started dying. Ended up pulling the tank off and rinsed numerous times and this is what came out. There's also the shaft of a screwdriver in there someone must have dropped trying to check the gas level. It's still in there. It runs much better now. [Linked Image]

Put a universal inline fuel filter on that thing, if it doesn't have one already.. And change it often.

If you could seal it that would be great but I'd still do as LG mentioned. Cheap and affective.

Gasahol will scrub the rust off and keep causing troubles in the fuel line. I'd seal it right away.

I pulled the tank on a snowmobile one time and dumped out not only the old fuel gauge (a long U of metal with a float that supposedly slid up and down it twisting the needle on the outside of the tank or cap, they didn't usually work too long) but also the springs and some of the plastic parts from the springloaded spout of one of those nonventing gas cans.

Not a bad idea on a dirty system.........BUT.......some of those inline fuel filters have a psi rating. Old tractors run on gravity fuel supply. If you put an inline filter in the fuel line downstream of a sediment bowl, and tractor starts to cough and die when fuel tank drops to around 1/4 tank or so, that is why. Takes weight of more fuel in tank to overcome the restriction of the inline filter.

A stand pipe in tank will help keep it from clogging filter.

That did cross my mind but this isn't a working tractor.

Pull the tank, dump some chat rock in and shake it around for a while to knock off the remaining rust.

Flush with some gas, refill & seal if it leaks.

My farmall was very similar. .
Took tank off tractor , put two handfuls of 1/4 x 20 square nuts in tank
Strapped the tank inside my cement mixer , and let her rip !
Added water in the tank and beat out all the rust ..
nice and shiny inside now :-)
