Do any of you have a shipping container for storage. Are some containers better than others. How did you prep the ground before hand?

We have a 40 ft high cube. It is a one use container - basically brand new. Light beige color - no rust, or very, very minimal. All seals in good shape and wind and water tight.
Absolutely love it. Terrifice storage for anything you want.
Just level the the spot your are going to put it. Thats all the ground prep you need to do.
PM me if you would like the contact info from the company we bought it from.
They did a great job - quick delivery, and set it exactly where we wanted it. Did the same for my neighbor - he bought 3 containers from them and is very pleased also.
They do offer veteran discounts.

I don't own one personally.
Sometimes we have a couple on a job for tools and sometimes a break area.
If we have access to a concrete pad we'll stage one on either side of the pad and span scaffold between the containers. Then nail plywood to them and cover with tarps. Makes a nice temporary work area. If it's a long term project we put on roof trusses and then sheet and tarp it. If it's cold we will enclose both ends.

I have four 20-footers, love them. Just place them on two eight foot railroad ties or treated timber.

Lots of choices out there, there’s single doors, doors at each end and multi doors plus other variations. Depending on the need storage VS work shop they have advantages and disadvantages. The standard single door holds the most with the worst access to what’s in it. The double door types offers better access but not totally the multi door offer greater access but less storage because of the doors not being good walls so stacking on them is not practical if you need to open them.

Home improvement stores carry solid cement blocks in different sizes and railroad ties but use good ties so they last longer when leveling. The containers are heavy my multi door needed a bigger hydraulic jack to lift it a floor jack or handiman was useless. I put mine on new gravel with a good binder it seems to be holding well I’m due to relevel if needed. One end had more gravel because of the pitch of the land.

Adding electric is tricky but not impossible depending on the level and usage, the containers have support channels a guy can use to rivet or bolt to if you want neat for just storage a couple strings of patio lights hung from the tie down loops will cover that.

I’ll get some pictures up shortly I tried before and lost the post tying to get the photos up.

I have one 40 , leveled off the spot and brought in some 3/4 minus . But I live in a dry area . I did a little spot rust prep and painted both the inside and out . I still need to run some silicone roof coating at some point on top . I also cut in two vents , one in the door and one at the rear

I have 2, both 40'. One regular height and one high cube. Neither are on level ground. I built piers from concrete blocks to level them. Neither are new or even one use but they are water tight just the same. I have shelves built into half the length of one of them and hook hangers along the top of the sides in the other half. Great for out of sight of prying eyes storage for stuff that does not mind heat. They do get hot inside even in partial shade. Mine are on two different properties, one in almost full shade and the other will be the same when I get the shed finished next to it. Both are the standard double door on one end.

If they are going to be in full sun, you should consider adding some ventilation. I see folks talking about condensation being an issue but I have not had a problem with that. I keep mine closed most of the time and have never had an issue with vermin in them. If you leave the doors open a lot, that could change. The worst I have had is the occasional bird gets trapped inside when I close the doors.

I have had one of mine for close to 20 years and all I have done to it is to keep the hinges lubricated and I had it moved when I moved recently. I did have a hinged ramp fabricated so I can load/unload wheeled equipment and still open an close the doors. The way the latches are designed on the doors, you can not build a fixed ramp level with the floor and still be able to open and close the doors. The ramp would have to be w=several inches lower than the floor for the doors to open/close.

IMO, for the money, they are hard to beat depending on what you plan to store in them.

Left side is original ground base you can see the ground is slanted towards the creek.

The other end needed more blocking because of the slope these solid cement blocks have worked well as adding that much gravel was not practical I might put up a wall there to hold the gravel in place working with a sloped pitch is a pain.

I have one like new I bought 3 years ago. It was called a one way. Beige in color A one condition. Not sure how long it will hold up, most likely will serve me a life time.

I prepared a level gravel bed and set it on 4 - 4x6 treated post sections 2' x 2'. Need to let them breathe underneath to prevent too much condensation. I painted my roof a flat black color of paint to increase the heat inside.

Our sole purpose is for rendering fish and tail oil. Mine is holding up well.

There is a special paint they recommend for touch up and painting when needed.

The tie down loops help hold a 1X2 in place along with a couple rubber washer screws from the backside to mount switches and plugs.

Had use of a 40' freezer container, it's on 4 or 5 wood posts, nothing else done to it. it has the door on one end and it's a pain getting stuff in and out. Need to keep the locking handles well lubed and a silicon spray on the door seal so it doesn't stick....

Own 2, 20 ft. setting on a 2" inch rock raised 6". Built a metal roof between them, and have place for my trailer, out of the weather. Best part there tax exempt

Saw a picture of a commercial boatyard that had 4 40's, stacked two high with a roof between them. Space between them was wide enough for a large boat, the two lower containers were the workshops and the two uppers were for storage....

My Beagle Club bought one to use as a generator shed on top of an old ammo bunker we use use as our field trial HQ. Works great All we did for it was to raise it off the dirt and level it with paving blocks.

This is a great way of setting a container, I have (2) and keeping them off the damp ground will make them last a very, very long time.

I have a 40' high cube. The ground slopes some. And I wanted to get it off the ground for moisture and pest reasons. I poured 12" x 4' concrete pillars at each corner. The front was approximately a foot off the ground. Made a ramp of dirt and crushed rock. It is used to store the tractor, atv, mineral, and miscellaneous supplies. The container is completely weather and packrat proof. Works Great!

I air hammered some 3.5” steel drill casings from the oilfields in as deep as I could get them, shot the elevation with a laser and cut them all off the same, welded some 3/8” plate to the top of each, set my 20 footer on there, and welded it in place. I love it being on pilings except that I can’t move it without having to torch it off there, torch the pipes level with the ground and repeat the whole time consuming process
