Not everything I caught was snared. I ran lines in New York State mostly for coons in the Lew Beach area of the Catskills. Was not a high volume coon area but they were bigger than NJ coons and the season opened earlier so I could run a line there for 10 days or so before the NJ season opener. Used 220's and 120's in survival cracker cans. Survival crackers were made in the early 1960's and stocked in all the air raid shelters. By the mid 1970's they were clearing them out of the shelters (school basements or other government buildings basements) and we got them by the truckload for animal feed. Cans came in 2 sizes one fit 220's and the other 120's. I learned quick to block around the front so that the coon was facing straight into the can when he fired the trap. Most coons were caught at the base of wild apple trees.

I had to cut the trap rivets off to get this big male out of the 120.

Ace went with me on this day

This coon got wacked over the nose and raided my set for more fish another time and was caught by the foot but his foot was not in the trap jaws rather it was pinched between the spring and the trap jaws.

Big cans were 10 inches wide, 10 inches tall and 13 inches long. Smaller cans were 5X10x13. I stood the small cans on edge with the trap in the upper portion and a board blocking the bottom part of the opening. With tin snips I cut notches in each side and by bending the trap springs upward it would lock the trap in place. Main thing, especially with the small cans was sticks or some type of blocking in front to make sure the coon was facing straight into the can. Also something behind the can so when the trap fired the trap went forward onto the coon and not the can being pushed backwards. The 120's trigger was on the inside of the jaws and all the way to one side. 220 trigger was center V'ed up from the bottom. Both size traps and cans worked equally well for coons but over the years of trapping this area I caught a half dozen gray fox and I believe all of them were caught in the smaller traps. Several bobcats were also caught but all of them were in 220's. Did not catch any fisher but they were rare in that area at that time. Bait was a small plastic bag filled with ground salt water fish tossed in the back of the can.
You may have noticed I used the smaller cans as cubbies with foot traps for marten and they show up in some of those pictures.
Eric
