Ive read mixed reviews on how to age a gobbler. It definitely isnt beard length, as Ive shot several birds with 10-11 inch beards and 3/4 inch spurs that come in around 20 lbs. Ive read that spur length is the most reliable, but also read that it may not be. My assumption is that bird is 3+, but I have no clue how to gauge after that. Sometimes you see a group of jakes where one or two are clearly bigger with longer beards, but theyre still last years birds.
Great bird no matter the official age.

It’s almost impossible to do so in the field. If it’s a Jake it’s in its first year. Toms are older than that. Unless it was banded as a Jake or poult and you harvest that bird and report the band you won’t really know in the field. That’s what a biologist friend told me.

Stop over cooking your meat! It isn’t gamey, it’s over cooked!
