Was set for 3 days in the Black Hills but came back the second day after the morning hunt. I always watch the weather closely and book a room at the last minute because things change quickly in the Hills. The reports said clear sky’s for the 3 days I was hunting wind 5-10 MPH.

Rain, wind and blowing most of the time not a gobble the first 2 mornings, Seen 2 hens the first morning the 3 the next guessing 2 of those were the same 2 from the day before in the same place.

Drove around 13 hours looking to locate some birds but zip nada I checked out 2 different units then more rain. I did see 60+ elk spread out in the one unit with fresh grass coming up from the recent rains. Seen a handful of elk crossing a large meadow I notice 3 yotes in tow not attacking just tagging along then a short distance down the road another group of elk heads for the same trees on the far side of the meadow they had 3 yotes in tow also. Did have a single yote cross in another place making 7 yotes that day.

Seen some NR hunters a PA plate and a MN plate and a few locals from that end of the state. Onx did not work great blurry but poor details then Google maps was about useless a blank screen with a road shown at times but not much more than that. I got on one trail that went deep into one area but looked to dead end in the middle of nowhere the road was covered with large chunks of rocks so I headed out but it’s on my better day list to check out.

Heading out this afternoon to see what I can find locally.

Law Dog did you save your area on OnX in an offline status? I have to do that in Nebraska because of no cell service. It works well.

New to Onx thought about that to late then did not do it when I had the chance. I’ll try it locally this week and get it figured out.

Thanks

Totally! I tried for turkey too and I didn’t take one home yet, but I didn’t regret my time spent afield

Another weird year it’s looking like lots of birds out there but they shut down only one gobbling in a farm place he had a few hens with him. Seen one hen I spooked walking the creek in the river hills. Found 2 strutting on some public but they never gobbled, not birds in there very often so nobody has bothered them this year.

Stayed until after dark not one gobble at the 2 places I listened at so that’s strange ticks were thick and the mosquitoes were getting into action still no grasshoppers around or crickets out yet.

Bad weather rolling in the next few days will pick it up next week.

We had some crappy weather here for the first week of the Pennsylvania spring turkey season. It rained the first three days. Me and a buddy still went out, but nobody likes sitting in a steady rain hunting turkeys, at least I don’t.

The birds were gobbling though, so that at least kept us interested. They are pretty henned up right now and not coming into calls as easily as they otherwise might.

I did manage to fill both my tags, one on Wednesday and one yesterday. Thar’s the first time I’ve used that special second tag in quite a while even though I buy one every year and have bought one every year since they were created in 2001.

I figure this year’s second bird cost me about $200 given what I pay each year for that special second tag. LOL

I think it’s money well spent though. It keeps me hunting after I fill my first tag. Otherwise, I’d be done for the season.

I’m kind of sad now that I don’t get to come up for the last week of the turkey hunt like I normally do. At least not the hunt turkeys, I may still come up to Camp.

Eh...wot?

I’ve noticed some changes in the spring dispersal the last couple years not sure why but they break up way later now. You still get a few that take hens and go off on their own but a lot of the birds stay in bigger hen/gobbler groups through the end of the season now. Some gobbling on the roost before sunup but little to none after fly down.If they are hened up no reason to make noise then.

It seems I see more predators working the morning roosts now that could have an impact on them with gobbling less.

This is the last weekend of the Missouri season. It’s gotten tough around here. Gobblers just not gobbling. Took the wife to a new place that I got permission on this morning. 280 acres of beautiful turkey habitat. Tracks everywhere. Dusting areas. Feathers. Never heard a peep. I’d have stayed if I had a tag left, but the wife had better things to do lol.

I think the hunting here would have been better in early April judging by what I was seeing on cameras. Gobblers really active...white heads and strutting all day. But it is difficult to "wait" if the season is open.

I wonder how WannaBe's western trip went? He hasn't been back on here to update us....unless I missed it.

I wonder what impact the TSS shot might have in the future if people believe in the magic it’s supposed to do for the users. I did not hear a shot in the Hills in those 2 days.

Lots of of roads/ trails it’s nice to drop a pin to find the right road in the dark to save time before the sun comes up.
