You can even cut that grape vine to the ground and it will very rapidly grow back. I would cut it down and graft some domestic grape scions to it, when it puts out appropriate sized shoots, to get some better grapes. The amount of food and nutrition those well established roots can send your scion is immense and you will likely have a lot of good grapes next year.

Back in 1982 I planted hazelnut trees with a concord or steuben grape at the base of each one along my woods. Grapes climbed the trees and look something like your pic.

Of course, it goes without saying that the plan was to produce grape-nuts.

Our place is chockful of grapevines. Some are so thick they go to the top of the canopy and make great nesting for everything. I see several coon sleeping in the tree tops before the canopy leaves out completely. Couldnt find a better more secure place to sleep the day off. Just like a built in hammock in all our trees.

I have wild grapes on my property. Back when we first moved here we cleared a small, 1/4 acre area to expand the existing yard. There were grapevines in there with 8-10" diameter bases on them. When you'd grab one up high and yank on it the upper branches of trees 100 feet away would shake.

After everything was cut low we made several big brush piles and burned them. Then I planted grass and now I mow it.

Wild grape vines are aggressive and will continue to come back if you don't take drastic measures to eliminate them.

I have mulberry trees here too. They grow almost as aggressively as the grape vines. In some places on the property they grow together. The mulberries act as trellises for the grapes until the grape vines eventually kill them.

Eh...wot?

Squirrels like nesting in trees with big grape vines in them.On a real cold winter day,tug on the vines and the squirrels come scampering out. laugh

This time of year, you could likely quickly fill a 5 gallon bucket by cutting a thick grape vine and letting it drip down. I cut some wild grape vines on Saturday and quickly left the area to avoid getting soaked

Had a big vine climbing into the tops of three or four trees. Started to cut it out and it seemed like the vines would never end. Unfortunately Keith I forgot about grafting scions to it. Will look to see if the stump is growing any shoots again!
