I am assuming that Ohio would have to raise sales taxes, payroll taxes, or something of that nature. I wish NC would do away with property taxes and go that route. The Gov. is going to get you one way or another.

Our property taxes here in southeast PA are criminally outrageous. The owners of the fifteen-year-old homes they built a mile away from me pay between $10,000.00 and $12,000.00 annually. And they are not mansions, just your basic 2,000-2,500 sq. ft. story-and-a-halves and two stories on 10-11 acres.
Myself and tens of thousands of other citizens of the commonwealth have been trying to get legislation passed to eliminate property tax for at least thirty years. We and a few state congressmen sympathetic to our cause came up with a great, workable plan decades ago.
The plan would have lowered the state sales tax by 1.7 points and spread it to food, clothing and other items not currently subject to sales tax. Feasibility studies showed that it would have generated more income than the current system and it would have been a lot more fair.
Under the current system, land/home owners in the state are solely responsible for the funding of the school system via outrageously high real-estate taxes. Under the proposed new system everybody that bought anything in PA would be helping support the education system whether they were residents or not. It was a great and fair plan and it was shown repeatedly that it would work, that it would generate more income than the current system.
Unfortunately, we have a very politically-powerful State Board of Education. Between them and corrupt Democrats and Rinos that support them, it never stood a chance of passing. Under the current system there is no oversight on how our real estate tax money is spent. the School Board does whatever it wants with it.
One of the big games they play is going around to small, local school districts and installing superintendents that force the building of new high schools. It happened here. We were told there was a "population bubble" coming up through the grades and by the time that demographic reached high-school age there would be no room for them. we fought it, went to school board meeting and voiced our objections. But we were repeatedly ignored or lied to.
So we got a new, 43-million dollar high school. The superintendent that made it happen (who we were paying $250,000.00 a year) got another feather in his cap and went off to rape the citizens of the next school district down the line.
Meanwhile, the old high school sits mostly empty. I call it the worlds most expensive janitorial supply closet. The population bubble never materialized, it was a lie.
The State Board of Education and their corrupt political allies are never going to let that cash cow die.
Eh...wot?

JMHO Property tax is a scam. It should go away same as half of the income taxes. Think about how much a state/county gets from sales tax, and now that all gambling is legal and taxed, there should be more than enough money to operate a second class government. Tired of seeing schools not even 50 years old tore down and a huge Campus replacing it! Same as a one lane bridge in the local park , replaced @ $ 750,000. These governments local and state on up just spend with abandon .

Darn, I have got to move....Keith, only 4 grand for taxes? Our property tax rate for Champaign County, Ohio, where I live, is 1.14%. I have to pay that on $351,000.00. It comes out to $4001.40 a year. Keith

What percentage rates are you paying in other states for property taxes?
Keith Our annual County real estate tax is currently set at 9.013 mills or 0.9013% Our annual school tax which is based on which school district you reside in is currently 36.2543 mills or 3.62543% That's a combined annual property tax rate of 4.52673% or $45.2673 per $1,000 of assessed property value. It goes up all the time but has never and will never go down. .

I have a couple stories I could tell about school boards and their waste and underhanded tactics, but based on those observations I will never vote for a school bond levy again.
