Seen a “poor possum” post on Facebook today they claim that opossums are endangered boy I had fun with that. That right up there with a sustainable study on coyotes.

Well I have noticed there are not as many of them around as when I was a kid. My Dad and Grandfather would usually catch opossums 1 to 1 with coons. I have seen it more like 4 or 5 to 1 these days, and few of those of gristle back buggers with a stub tail. I noticed this back in the 90's and it hasn't changes, so not sure but it seems to me to be less of them, though i have had weeks where I swore they must caret the forest floor

On my property I'm running right at 1:1 coon:possum.
Last fall I had 1 more opposum than coon. This spring its 1 more coon. So the total since I started last fall is 22 each.

I would say the reason for more coons and less opossums is due to the traps. DPs based on my experience catch coons to opossums at a much higher ratio than other traps. I think I’ve caught 4 or 5 opossums at one location in DPs but lots of times they walk past the DPs. Set a cage trap and a DP in several different locations and see what you catch. You will catch both in either trap but I bet the ratio is much higher for coons in the DPs and opossums in the cage traps. I caught 43 opossums and 22 coons this past season. I had 2 DPs and 1 cage trap in one location that caught about six opossums and my cell camera would get pics of the opossums walking all around the DPs before getting to the cage trap and getting caught. Never caught an opossum in the DPs in that one spot. I bought more cage traps because of this and caught the most opossums I’ve ever caught off our farm. I normally had about a 1 to 1 ratio of coons to opossums. This is with about 10 foot holds, 45 DPs and 3 cage traps. This year I set 11 cage traps and about 45 DPs and 10 footholds. Ratio was almost 2 to 1 for opossums. I may buy more cage traps because of what I experienced this year.

They moved up here to MN. More possums here than I've ever seen now. And I've been paying attention for close to 50 trapping seasons.

The DNR told me a hard winter will really knock them back...and the lack thereof in the last few years could be part of our recent increase, but it's been a steady increase (most years) since I was a kid.

And even though not native to MN, we now have an official possum season thanks to someone knowing the right legislature (not the DNRS fault this time).

Possum's in the 'simmon tree, raccoon's on the ground. Raccoon says you son-of-a-gun shake them 'simmons down!

If the coon population is high I see less possums if distemper comes through my grinners increase greatly. Seen a post on the possum hugger site a guy thought the increase in armadillos has decreased his possum numbers I’d have no way to test such a theory. Armadillos have moved into central MO where I spend a lot of time at a buddies place, 40 years ago if you seen a possum they would think you’re crazy.

A season on Possum? I have heard it all! The next time someone says Washington is the looniest State I will point to MN.

I have never seen one and we don't have and the best thing that could is they totally disappear from the planet.

The bunny huggers jump on the 5000 tick story to give them a purpose on earth they conveniently leave out the livestock virus they carry that kills horses.
