I’m sitting in Sioux Falls SD heading east to Lapeer MI, I’m looking at two routes, either I90 east or dropping down to Omaha and taking I80 east. I’ve got a lot of miles to put behind me so I ain’t looking for a scenic route..
Google maps says I’d add about a half hour going the I80 route but I’d miss most of Chicago going that route.. not a fan of driving through Chicago..
What so say you?

i'm with you - I hate Chicago roads/traffic. If I have to go through there, I try to do so between 9p and 6a. If you're driving straight through, you would be ok to take I-90, IMO. safe travels AND, It's citizens!!!!! Grrr

I90 is not bad if you hit Chicago about 7pm or later. Even 80 is a mess during the day.

At 2 pm its a toss up. No rush hour but accidents shutting down traffic can be fun. Even someone getting a ticket. Everyone slows way down to look and traffic backs up.

google is very stupid about Chicago , It thinks the shortest route is through down town , technically it is by miles but definitely not by minutes unless it is 02:00 to 04:00
add a stop in the route on google maps at Chicago Roofers Apprenticeship, 7045 Joliet Rd, Indian Head Park, IL 60525 ( I just picked this off the map because it was near the interchange you want.) this forces it to re-route you down the 290 to the 294 and avoid the worst of Chicago just cancel the stop when you get close.
I was down there in the thick of it last week on Wacker drive and Michigan Ave , have way more than my fill of it for a while.
fill up in Janesville WI there is a Kwik trip1919 Humes Rd, Janesville, WI 53545 and a Woodman's gas station just off 90 that have the best prices in the area Kwik trip is easier with a trailer. I wouldn't do a trailer over 25 feet at either. there is a loves and travel America if you are pulling a big trailer.
gas will be 40 cents higher when you cross into the ILL state taxes then drive strait through you want to avoid Chicago even the bypass around commute times 7-10 am and 3-7 pm
if you don't have an I-Pass you want to order one , it cuts the tolls in more than half and Indian also has tolls you set up the account 10 dollar deposit for the transponder and it makes tolls stress free all over the eastern half of the country as they all are linked to each other so one transponder works for everything I have come acoss east of the Mississippi

Go north thru UP and then down thru the upper mitt. Did the chicago thing going out to the NTA last year and brought the north route home....guess which one was more enjoyable Typically that’s the route I take but I brought the wife down here to spend her B-day with her daughter.. Our route coming back home will be via the UP..

Pete how would that working ordering Ipass today and rolling through Chi town tomorrow? I think you register your plate number and it will work of the plate number reader if it doesn't get a hit on the transponder yup you can set up just by plate https://getipass.com/ option on the right

From Souix Falls you could hear east to 35N at Albert Lea to Duluth then take 2 east, to123 South to 75 south to flint then 69 east to Lapeer will add a few miles but beats going through Chicago

I drive back to central NYS once a year in the summer to visit family and friends.
As of 2 years ago I no longer drive through Chicago. I head south before Joliet, drive east to Rt 49, and back north to 90. A little slower (it's a divided 4 lane with stop lights) but no idiots to deal with. I've often taken a similar route, but on Hwy 30. It is an interesting drive through some tough neighborhoods on the south side, but the traffic isn't bad at all.
