Boy, I have had my experiences with cow/calf rage and it is nothing to take lightly.
Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

Your daughter in law still remembers that cold day in February that I had to grab her out of the sled and stash her in the forks of a birch tree ....out of reach of a cow moose that didn't want to leave the packed trail. I’m sure you remember the old guy that got killed by a cow on the U of A campus in Anchorage back in the 90’s. Chuck: I thought that was a young gal who tried to kiss a cow moose on campus.

I like shooting them with my slingshot Hitting them in the ribs makes a neat hollow drum sound. To really get them to leave I shoot them in the upper neck, just below the ear. They don't like that , and after frowning at me safely behind a tree, they sometimes kick a back foot then leave. Their nervous system reactions are very delayed and strange. I believe the old man who was killed was walking outside a store, if I recall right. Teens had been throwing rocks at her, so when the old man walked past, she was in a bad mood. He seemed like he wasn't aware at all of her presence and just walked way too close to her to begin with.

I was away on a range clearance taking care of duds, and Rhonda was home. About 4 am one morning she got up and saw a cow and calf in the garden munching away. She got the bb gun, opened the window and popped the girl in the hind end. She and the calf took off, but they came back in about an hour and had to be persuaded to leave again.
Some mornings there would be a cow laying behind my truck at the house in the morning when I needed to go to work. Fortunately, my yelling at her persuaded her to move. I was a bit nervous, because I'd heard the stories about them causing bodily harm to folks.

LOL the hollow thunk sound is fun to hear ! But as Mr Paul stated, they are on my place getting into mischief , checking into my aspen, maples , even my wild patch of huckleberries . They have all the mountains to find berries. Some other times they were on a trail and wouldn't move. So I shoot them with ball bearings that sear into their hides and makes them jump. You can get very accurate with a slingshot if it is used enough

At 80-100 yards, bird shot out of a 20 gauge gets their attention. Not enough to penetrate, but it’ll knock some hair off and send them on their way I can’t imagine using birdshot with a 20 gauge at 100 yards would even hit a moose. Lol I don’t even try shooting grouse with one much further than 30 yards. Must be the noise!

And #4 through a full choke definitely makes it 100 yards. Not with a lot of energy, but it gets there

Lol I don’t even try shooting grouse with one much further than 30 yards. Must be the noise! I shot my cousin in his legs about 80 yards with a 12g. rabbit ran between us and he cut loose on it. shot hit all around me. I sent one back at his legs. He made some noise. We were younger than driving age at the time. In our early 20's I was over at his house and he was picking at his leg say something has been bothering him for a while. He dug in with his knife a bit and came up with piece of 6 shot. He rolled it around looking at it for a min then looked at me and asked if I wanted it back. it went thr carthart bibs at that distance and into his leg enough to stay about 10 years. He has not once shot anywhere close to me since. One of his friend I didn't know went hunting with us once and I told him if he shoots me my cousin or my dog or even near us I would shoot him . He laughed like I was joking. My cousin informed him I was not joking and I had shot him. I will never forget his face when he realized I was serous. I don't think the kid took a shot all day.
